Five Sources of Power: Legitimate, Reward, Coercive, Referent, and Expertise
Read each of the five scenarios below and choose one of the five sources of power to resolve the challenge in each scenario and explain why that source is appropriate.
Scenario #1
Assume you are a supervisor of an IT department at a website hosting company. You want your staff to complete a large project within the next two months. Usually such a project would take about three months to accomplish. To persuade your staff to rise to this challenge, you offer each of them three additional paid vacation days. Your staff enjoys taking three-day weekends, so the incentive should motivate them to finish the project within the shorter time frame.
As the supervisor, you are using ________________ power to motivate your staff.
Reason(s) for Choice:
Scenario #2
Assume you work at a local retail store. As a part-time employee working your way through college,
You are not interested in becoming a manager. Even so, sometimes you wish you were in charge. Just yesterday, your boss asked if you would be willing to work two extra days per week for a month. After you explained that you could work only your usual three days per week due to college and other commitments, your boss threatened to cut your hours indefinitely. Given how much you need the money, you grudgingly agreed to work the two extra days per week.
Your manager is using __________________ power to persuade you to work the two extra days.
Reason(s) for Choice:
Scenario #3
Assume you were recently promoted to assistant manager of the bank in your hometown. You are friends with the employees that now report to you. You notice that they still treat you like a buddy and do not seem to respect you in your new role. You decide that it will be in everyoneâs best interest if you assert yourself by reminding them that you are now their manager (and not their buddy). This is a challenging transition, but you feel the need to have their respect now that you are the manager.
You are using __________________ power to encourage employees to respect you in your new role.
Reason(s) for Choice:
Scenario #4
Assume you are an experienced marketer of outdoor adventure trips. You recently changed jobs. While working for your previous employer, Outdoor Adventures, you created several successful marketing programs that resulted in a 30% increase in sales over a three-year period. Now that you recently joined Eco Tours & Adventures, none of your co-workers know the extent of your marketing knowledge. Your goal is to increase your power within the company. You decide to develop a really impactful and creative marketing campaign unlike any used by Eco Tours in the past.
You are using _________________ power to increase your influence at Eco Tours & Adventures.
Reason(s) for Choice:
Scenario #5
Assume you are a salesperson and just found out that your organizationâs largest client is thinking about moving its business to one of your competitors. If this happens, you will lose about 30% of your commission this year, not to mention the loss of revenue to your company. You decide to rush over to see your contact at the client company. You spend two hours listening to why the client might leave and ask repeatedly what your company can do to make things right. You are nervous, but still use your charm and sense of humor to convince your contact that you and your company deserve one more chance. Your contact agrees to get you a meeting with the CEO and to put in a good word for your company. She says she is doing this because she likes you professionally.
You are using ________________ power to convince your contact that you deserve another chance.

Serenity Spa Vacations Inc. (SSV) is a company that specializes in organizing tours of luxury health and wellness spas around the world. During the first four years of its business, SSV experienced modest growth. Just over a year ago, however, the company was featured in an exclusive travel magazine. This, coupled with excellent web reviews and favourable word of mouth, fuelled a period of exponential growth that continues to this day. As there are a number of other well-established companies that offer similar services, SSVâs management knows that to continue its success, it must expand its loyal customer base by providing exemplary service and tours while controlling costs. SSVâs accounting information system (AIS) currently consists of a purchased accounting software package that has only basic features and cannot be upgraded. It is supplemented by various spreadsheets used to track important information, including payroll, spa availability, bookings in progress, client preferences, and customer ratings of the wellness packages sold. SSVâs vice-president of operations understands that the companyâs current AIS is woefully inadequate and must be replaced with one that permits management to better direct the organizationâs activities. The vice-president has requested you, CPA, the companyâs chief financial officer, investigate the options that are available and make a recommendation as to how to proceed. The vice-president stated that the criteria Intermediate Financial Reporting 1 Project 1 6 / 6 considered should include cost, reliability, ability to accommodate continuing growth, reducing duplicative data entry, functionality, and compatibility with online purchases by customers. You have eight people working for you in the accounting department in two locations and as such know that multi-user capabilities over a networked system are a must. You are well aware of the inadequacies of the current system and the issues they are causing, and have researched various possibilities. You have narrowed the choice down to three options as described below, all of which meet the criteria of compatibility, multi-user functionality, network capability, and reducing duplicative data entry. ⢠Commercial package in the cloud (CPC) â SSV can arrange to access a widely used commercial software package for $2,750 per month based on an 18-month rental agreement. Your research suggests that the software package is very reliable, represents a significant improvement over SSVâs exiting AIS, and includes 100% of the identified âmust havesâ and about 60% of SSVâs ânice to haves.â Arranging access and uploading existing data take about two weeks. When a cloud-computing solution is used, expanding capacity is easily arranged at an additional cost. Moreover, as the host regularly upgrades the system on an ongoing basis, potential obsolescence isnât a major factor. ⢠Commercial package purchased (CPP) â SSV can purchase the software package described above for $90,000. Installation of the program and conversion of the existing program will take about six weeks. The expected useful life of the new software is four years. Expanding capacity at a later date is easily accommodated by adding an additional module at a relatively nominal cost. ⢠Custom-built package (CBP) â You received two quotes from software engineers to custom build a system that meets all of SSVâs identified needs. The first engineer, who is very well known and has an excellent track record in building similar systems, quoted a price of $150,000. She suggests that the system will take about one year to build and install. The second engineer, who is new to the industry, promises delivery in six months at a firm cost of $80,000. The expected useful life of the custom-built software is four years. The system can be expanded at a later date; however, the expansion would have to be a customized solution, designed by a software engineer, at a cost that will likely be substantively higher than acquiring additional capacity for the CPP. Required: Use the CPA Way to assess this situation and make a recommendation to the vicepresident of operations of SSV.

2. Your answers may be entered using a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet OR may be entered in a table format using Microsoft Word.
HEALTHY OPTIONS INC.
Healthy Options is a Pharmaceutical Company which is considering investing in a new production line of portable electrocardiogram (ECG) machines for its clients who suffer from cardiovascular diseases. The company has to invest in equipment which costs $2,500,000 and falls within a MARCS depreciation of 5 years, and is expected to have a scrap value of $200,000 at the end of the project. Other than the equipment, the company needs to increase its cash and cash equivalents by $100,000, increase the level of inventory by $30,000, increase accounts receivable by $250,000 and increase accounts payable by $50,000 at the beginning of the project. Healthy Options expects the project to have a life of five years. The company would have to pay for transportation and installation of the equipment which has an invoice price of $450,000.
The company has already invested $75,000 in Research and Development and therefore expects a positive impact on the demand for the new product line. Expected annual sales for the ECG machines in years one to three are $1,200,000, and $850,000 in the following two years. The variable costs of production are projected to be $267,000 per year in years one to three and $375,000 in years four and five. Fixed overhead is $180,000 per year over the life of the project.
The introduction of the new line of portable ECG machines will cause a net decrease of $50,000 in profit contribution after taxes, due to a decrease in sales of the other lines of tester machines produced by the company. By investing in the new product line Healthy Options would have to use a packaging machine which the company already has and which will be sold at the end of the project for $350,000 after-tax in the equipment market.
The companyâs financial analyst has advised Healthy Options to use the weighted average cost of capital as the appropriate discount rate to evaluate the project. Information about the companyâs sources of financing is provided below:
⢠The company will contract a new loan in the sum of $2,000,000 that is secured by machinery and the loan has an interest rate of 6 percent. Healthy Options has also issued 4,000 new bond issues with an 8 percent coupon, paid semiannually, and which matures in 10 years. The bonds were sold at par, and incurred floatation cost of 2 percent per issue.
⢠The companyâs preferred stock pays an annual dividend of 4.5 percent and is currently selling for $60, and there are 100,000 shares outstanding.
⢠There are 300,000 million shares of common stock outstanding, and they are currently selling for $21 each. The beta on these shares is 0.95. Other relevant information about the company follows:
The 20-year Treasury Bond rate is currently 4.5 percent and you have estimated market-risk premium to be 6.75 percent using the returns on stocks and Treasury Bonds from 2010 to 2019. Healthy Options has a marginal tax rate of 25 percent.
As a recent graduate of the UWIOC, The General Manager of the company has hired you to work alongside the Financial Controller of the company to help determine whether the company should invest in the new product line. He has provided you with the following questions to guide you in your assessment of the project and to present your findings to the Company.
REQUIRED:
7. Determine the weighted average cost of capital (WACC) for Healthy Options.
8. Calculate the initial investment cash-flows.
9. Calculate the after-tax operating cash-flows.
10. Determine the tax on salvage value of the equipment, then show the terminal year cash-flows.
11. Identify three (3) relevant cash flows which were mentioned in the case and how they should be treated in the capital budgeting decision.
12. Taking into consideration all the information given, determine the Net Present Value of the project and advise the company on whether to invest in the new line of product.

Study1: A team of cognitive psychologists conducted a study on the effects of sleep deprivation on short-term memory decay. Forty-eight participants stayed in a lab for two days. Twenty-four of the participants are randomly assigned to a condition in which they are not permitted to sleep during that period. The other twenty-four are allowed to sleep whenever they want. At the end of the two days, the participants complete a task that involves reading a list of 20 words, then recalling as many words as possible.
Study2: A researcher examined the effect of different kinds of music on general math ability. Forty-eight participants were randomly assigned to do a series of math tasks under one of three conditions: 16 while listening to soft gentle music, 16 while listening to loud intense music, and 16 while in silence. The math quiz contained arithmetic, geometry, and word problems. There were 25 items that were 2 points each.
Study3: A health psychologist conducted a study on the how the number of hours a person exercised each week relates to the number of days being sick per year. Participants were randomly selected from the community and provided self-reports through a series of questions on the topics of interest.
Study4: A study was designed to test the effects of science fiction movies on participants' belief in the supernatural. A scale was designed to measure the degree that a participant believes in the supernatural on a 1-7 Likert Scale (high scores indicate high levels of belief). Fifty-seven participants, selected via random digit dialing (RDD) responded to the scale before and after watching Return of the Jedi, a popular science fiction movie.
Study5: A researcher at a drug treatment center wanted to determine the best combination of treatments that would lead to more substance free days. This researcher believed there were two key factors in helping drug addiction: type of treatment and type of counseling. The researcher was interested in either residential or outpatient treatment programs and either cognitive-behavioral, psychodynamic, or client-centered counseling approaches. As new clients enrolled at the center they were randomly assigned to one of six experimental groups. After 3 months of treatment, each clientâs symptoms were measured.
Study6: An organizational psychologist is hired as a consultant by a person planning to open a coffee house for college students. The coffee house owner wants to know if her customers will drink more coffee depending on the ambience of the coffee house. To test this, the psychologist sets up three similar rooms, each with its own theme (Tropical; Old Library; or New York CafĂŠ ) then arranges to have thirty students spend an afternoon in each room while being allowed to drink all the coffee they like. (The order in which they sit in the rooms is counterbalanced.) The amount each participant drinks is recorded for each of the three themes.
Study7: A manager at a retail store in the mall wants to increase profit. The manager wants to see if the storeâs layout (one main circular path vs. a grid system of paths) influences how much money is spent depending on whether there is a sale. The belief is that when there is a sale customers like a grid layout, while customers prefer a circular layout when there is no sale. Over two days the manager alternates the store layout, and has the same group of customers come each day. Based on random assignment, half of the customers are told there is a sale (20 % will be taken off the final purchases), while the other half is told there is no sale. At the end of each day, the manager calculates the profit.

Review the Payment Time Case Study and Data Set.
Develop a 700-word report including the following calculations and using the information to determine whether the new billing system has reduced the mean bill payment time:
Case Study â Payment Time Case Study
Major consulting firms such as Accenture, Ernst & Young Consulting, and Deloitte & Touche Consulting employ statistical analysis to assess the effectiveness of the systems they design for their customers. In this case, a consulting firm has developed an electronic billing system for a Stockton, CA, trucking company. The system sends invoices electronically to each customerâs computer and allows customers to easily check and correct errors. It is hoped the new billing system will substantially reduce the amount of time it takes customers to make payments. Typical payment timesâmeasured from the date on an invoice to the date payment is receivedâusing the trucking companyâs old billing system had been 39 days or more. This exceeded the industry standard payment time of 30 days.
The new billing system does not automatically compute the payment time for each invoice because there is no continuing need for this information. The management consulting firm believes the new system will reduce the mean bill payment time by more than 50 percent. The mean payment time using the old billing system was approximately equal to, but no less than, 39 days. Therefore, if Âľ denotes the new mean payment time, the consulting firm believes that Âľ will be less than 19.5 days. Therefore, to assess the systemâs effectiveness (whether Âľ < 19.5 days), the consulting firm selects a random sample of 65 invoices from the 7,823 invoices processed during the first three months of the new systemâs operation. Whereas this is the ďŹrst time the consulting company has installed an electronic billing system in a trucking company, the ďŹrm has installed electronic billing systems in other types of companies.
Analysis of results from these other companies show, although the population mean payment time varies from company to company, the population standard deviation of payment times is the same for different companies and equals 4.2 days. The payment times for the 65 sample invoices are manually determined and are given in the ExcelÂŽ spreadsheet named âThe Payment Time Caseâ. If this sample can be used to establish that new billing system substantially reduces payment times, the consulting firm plans to market the system to other trucking firms.

Caitlin Kelly has worked as a part-time cashier for six years while attending high school and college. Over those six years, Caitlin has been able to schedule her part-time job around her academic and social life by requesting and getting the shifts she wants.
Caitlin has been offered a full-time summer job with a local marketing firm. She also wants to join the firmâs soccer team, which plays or practices many nights during the week. She has written a message requesting a four-month leave of absence if she cannot work occasionally with irregular shifts.
You have been recently promoted to the role of assistant manager at The Super Market, and the manager has forwarded you Caitlinâs message, asking you to respond to her. The manager, Dominic Ricci, indicated that they would really like to see Caitlin stay over the summer, and if not, return in the fall. However, the manager has asked you to make sure she is aware of the organizationâs new policy. The Super Market has instituted a new policy to ease the complexity of scheduling and to provide employees with a stable and consistent schedule. It states that The Super Market will work with part-time employees to develop a regular schedule, where they work the same assigned shifts on the same days and times each week. But once they have their assigned shift, they must keep it.
Unless part-time cashiers are prepared to work the regularly scheduled assigned shifts, they will be asked to resign. Furthermore, employees who quit their job may be rehired if positions become available when they return, but at a lower starting salary. In Caitlinâs case, if she were to quit and return after the summer, in September, she will lose her $19 hourly wage and have to start at a lower rate of $15.00 per hour, if a position is available.

Subject: Summer Leave
Hi
I just wanted to let you know that I have gotten an amazing opportunity to work at marketing firm full-time over the summer. Marketing is a career I am considering, so I am really excited about taking the job.
As well, the department asked me to play on their soccer team and they said that we will be practicing or playing many evenings after work. So I might be able to take a few night shifts over the summer. I will know which nights at least a week in advance.
I will be able to return to my regular part-time work in the fall, when school starts again. I have been working at the The Super Market for 6 years now so I was hoping that, if it were possible to work the odd night shift during the summer that would be great. Otherwise, I would like to take a 4-month leave of absence until school starts. Please let me know what is possible.
Thanks,
Caitlin

Can you please respond to Caitlinâs email. We would really love to see her continue working here over the summer, but explain to her the new company policy. See what you can work out with her to accommodate her request. Thanks, Dom

The consumer food database contains five variables: Annual Food Spending per Household, Annual Household Income, Non-Mortgage Household Debt, Geographic Region of the U.S. of the Household, and Household Location. There are 200 entries for each variable in this database representing 200 different households from various regions and locations in the United States. Annual Food Spending per Household, Annual Household Income, and Non-Mortgage Household Debt are all given in dollars. The variable Region tells in which one of four regions the household resides. In this variable, the Northeast is coded as 1, the Midwest is coded 2, the South is coded as 3, and the West is coded as 4. The variable Location is coded as 1 if the household is in a metropolitan area and 2 if the household is outside a metro area. The data in this database were randomly derived and developed based on actual national norms. The consumer food database contains five variables: Annual Food Spending per Household, Annual Household Income, Non-Mortgage Household Debt, Geographic Region of the U.S. of the Household, and Household Location.
