During the 1800s, and well into the 1900s, families took care of their own members whenever possible. Several generations lived together, with the younger generation taking care of the older and vice versa. Post 1900s, the joint family system started disintegrating.
What factors led to disintegration of the joint family system?
What has been the impact of this disintegration on aging people and long-term care?
Did disintegration have any benefits for health service organizations? Why or why not?
At the same time this shift occurred in the family structure, health care organizations were experiencing continuous changes in their operating styles. The long-term care system took some time to catch up with the changing nature of businesses. In the 1990s and early 2000s, long-term care was seen to experience several turbulent changes, particularly related to its operations, management, and structure. Research the South University Online Library and the Internet to find information on the changes in the long-term care system in the United States and respond to the following questions:
How have the operations, management, and structural changes of the 1990s and early 2000s impacted the long-term care system today?
What are the strengths and weaknesses of the present long-term care system in the United States?

Calculating the Direct Labor Rate Variance and the Direct Labor Efficiency Variance
9.1: Guillermo has found a typical oil change takes 24 minutes and 6.2 quarts of oil are used. In June, Guillermo had 980 oil changes.
Refer to Cornerstone Exercise 9.1. Guillermo's Oil and Lube Company provided the following information for the production of oil changes during the month of June:
Actual number of oil changes performed: 980
Actual number of direct labor hours worked: 386 hours
Actual rate paid per direct labor hour: $14.50
Standard rate per direct labor hour: $14.00
Required:
1. Calculate the direct labor rate variance (LRV) and the direct labor efficiency variance (LEV) for June using the formula approach.
2. Calculate the direct labor rate variance (LRV) and the direct labor efficiency variance (LEV) for June using the graphical approach.
3. Calculate the total direct labor variance for oil changes for June.
4. What if the actual wage rate paid in June was $12.40? What impact would that have had on the dirct labor rate variance (LRV)? On the direct labor efficiency variance (LEV)?

1. In cases where the markets are too thin for viable open-market operations, or the monetary base cannot be controlled for some reason, the monetary authorities often attempt to limit the creation of reserves by the banking system through the imposition of, or changes in, reserve ratios against demand deposits and sometimes also against other types of deposits.
Select one:
True
False
2. In the United States, the discount rate is frequently below the market short interest rates; since banks can make a profit from borrowing from the Fed and then buying market instruments, keeping the discount rate below the market rates becomes an incentive for commercial banks to borrow from the Fed.
Select one:
True
False
3. Since the early 1990s, the most common tools of monetary policy in developed economies have been changes in interest rates, supported by changes in the money supply induced by open-market operations and borrowing from the central bank.
Select one:
True
False
4. In the Western economies, changes in the required reserve ratios are now either no longer available as an instrument of monetary policy or not used in practice for this purpose.

The Texas State Legislature is considered a part-time or amateur legislature because of its infrequent meeting schedule of 140 days every other year. The part-time nature is meant to preserve the idea of a citizen legislature. Meeting biennially has advantages and disadvantages, but it is the system that we have become accustomed to. One of the drawbacks is that many professions do not afford the flexibility of time off to serve in the legislature. Think of your average store clerk, bank teller, or teacher.
Are these professions that allow for the equivalent of 4 months off every other year to serve in the House or Senate?
Additionally, the low wage does not allow for legislators to leave their professions so that they can focus full time on lawmaking. Do you think we need to make any changes to allow more people of different professional backgrounds to serve, or do you think it is fine the way it is? If you think we need to make changes, what changes would you make and why? If the sessionis fine the way it is, justify why.
What changes would you make to open up the legislature or do you believe that we need to keep the time and pay limited. Make sure you explain your answers

Three years ago, Karen Suez and her brother-in-law Reece Jones opened Gigasales Department Store. For the fi rst 2 years, business was good, but the following condensed income statement results for 2017 were disappointing
GIGASALES DEPARTMENT STORE Income Statement For the Year Ended December 31, 2017
Net sales $700,000
Cost of goods sold 560,000
Gross profi t 140,000
Operating expenses
Selling expenses $100,000
Administrative expenses 20,000
120,000
Net income $ 20,000
Karen believes the problem lies in the relatively low gross profi t rate of 20%. Reece believes the problem is that operating expenses are too high. Karen thinks the gross profi t rate can be improved by making two changes. (1) Increase average selling prices by 15%; this increase is expected to lower sales volume so that total sales dollars will increase only 4%. (2) Buy merchandise in larger quantities and take all purchase discounts. These changes to purchasing practices are expected to increase the gross profi t rate from its current rate of 20% to a new rate of 25%. Karen does not anticipate that these changes will have any effect on operating expenses.
Reece thinks expenses can be cut by making these two changes. (1) Cut 2018 sales salaries of $60,000 in half and give sales personnel a commission of 2% of net sales. (2) Reduce store deliveries to one day per week rather than twice a week; this change will reduce 2018 delivery expenses of $40,000 by 40%. Reece feels that these changes will not have any effect on net sales. Karen and Reece come to you for help in deciding the best way to improve net income.
Instructions With the class divided into groups, answer the following. (a) Prepare a condensed income statement for 2018 assuming (1) Karen’s changes are implemented and (2) Reece’s ideas are adopted. (b) What is your recommendation to Karen and Reece? (c) Prepare a condensed income statement for 2018 assuming both sets of proposed changes are made. (d) Discuss the impact that other factors might have. For example, would increasing the quantity of inventory increase costs? Would a salary cut affect employee morale? Would decreased morale affect sales? Would decreased store deliveries decrease customer satisfaction? What other suggestions might be considered?
