Pick a period in Western history OR a non-Western traditional society and write about the role of women in that period or society. You could, for example, examine the role of women in ancient Greek society, Roman society, medieval society, and/or in American society in antebellum South or in the industrial North before the Civil War. Or you could examine the role of women in traditional Arabic tribal society, African society, Latin American tribal society, Inuit culture, and so forth. (You can research any one of these topics through the library or by utilizing good online resources; this is a mini research project.) You can focus on one or more than one society, depending on your own interest in the research.

Domino’s Pizza abandoned its current expansion into several European markets. The chain announced it would suspend its plan to add new stores and sell approximately 100 existing stores in Switzerland, Sweden, Iceland and Norway. The decision came after stores in these four countries failed to make a profit for several years.

Investors applauded the decision and pushed UK division of Domino’s Pizza’s stock price up by more than 5% after the announcement. The chain indicated it would focus future efforts on the UK and Ireland and rebuild relationships with franchisees. These relationships were damaged over time as Domino’s Pizza failed to respond to issues of rising food costs and higher wages.

The UK and Irish outlets were very profitable for years but have been hurt by competition from online delivery such as Uber Eats and Deliveroo. Domino’s is no longer “the only game in town” and the chain needs to help franchisees compete in the new market. The firm failed to invest enough in IT infrastructure to help them compete with these new sources. Franchise owners registered their displeasure by refusing to participate in proposed marketing campaigns until the issues are addressed.

Thinking Critically Questions:

  1. Why is the decision to pull out of these four nations a capital budgeting decision?
  2. What other capital budgeting issues does Domino’s management need to address?
  3. How did Uber Eats affect cash flows?

Consider the street in Idaho City, with 5000 families looking for a new tent. Each family’s maximum willingness to pay for a tent is $120. In addition to the price at the store, each family bears a cost of $20 per mile to transport the tent home. Suppose there is a single tent seller on this street, Camping Gears, CG, and CG is planning to open new branches in this camping town along this street. CG has a constant unit cost of $40 per tent, and the fixed cost of opening a new branch is $2000.

(a) If CG wants to set a price low enough to serve all 5000 families, what is the highest price it can set if CG will have 1 branch? 2 branches? 3 branches? What is the highest price it can set if CG will have n branches?

(b) Write CG’s profit function with n branches and find the optimal number of branches if CG wants to serve all families.

(c) What is the total transportation cost paid by all customers when CG has only one branch? 2 branches? 3 branches? What is the total transportation cost paid by all customers when CG has n branches?

(d) Write the cost minimization problem for the sum of the total transportation and set-up costs. Solve for the optimal number of branches that maximizes total surplus.

Identifying Relevant Costs and Revenues
The Village of Bomont operates a power plant on a river that flows through town. The village uses some of this generated electricity to operate a water treatment plant and sells the excess electricity to a local utility. The city council is evaluating two alternative proposals:

  • Proposal A calls for replacing the generators used in the plant with more efficient generators that will produce more electricity and have lower operating costs. The salvage value of the old generators is higher than their removal cost.

  • Proposal B calls for raising the level of the dam to retain more water for generating power and increasing the force of water flowing through the dam. This will significantly increase the amount of electricity generated by the plant. Operating costs will not be affected.

Required
Presented are a number of cost and revenue items. Indicate in the appropriate columns whether each item is relevant or irrelevant to proposals A and B.

Proposal A Proposal B
1. Cost of new furniture for the city manager's office
2. Cost of old generators
3. Cost of new generators
4. Operating cost of old generators
5. Operating cost of new generators
6. The police chief's salary
7. Depreciation on old generators
8. Salvage value of old generators
9. Removal cost of old generators
10. Cost of raising dam
11. Maintenance costs of water plant
12. Revenues from sale of electricity

Consider two populations of coins, one of pennies and one of quarters. A random sample of 25 pennies was selected, and the mean age of the sample was 32 years. A random sample of 35 quarters was taken, and the mean age of the sample was 19 years.

For the sampling distribution of the difference in sample means, have the conditions for normality been met?

  • Yes, the conditions for normality have been met because the distributions of age for the two populations are approximately normal.

    A

  • Yes, the conditions for normality have been met because the sample sizes taken from both populations are large enough.

    B

  • No, the conditions for normality have not been met because neither sample size is large enough and no information is given about the distributions of the populations.

    C

  • No, the conditions for normality have not been met because the sample size for the pennies is not large enough and no information is given about the distributions of the populations.

    D

  • No, the conditions for normality have not been met because the sample size for the quarters is not large enough and no information is given about the distributions of the populations.

  • E

For a weekly town council meeting in a certain town, the distribution of the duration of the meeting is approximately normal with mean 53 minutes and standard deviation 2.5 minutes. For a weekly arts council meeting in the same town, the distribution of the duration of the meeting is approximately normal with mean 56 minutes and standard deviation 5.1 minutes. Let x¯1x¯1 represent the average duration, in minutes, of 10 randomly selected town council meetings, and let x¯2x¯2 represent the average duration, in minutes, of 10 randomly selected arts council meetings.

Which of the following is the best reason why the sampling distribution of x¯1−x¯2x¯1−x¯2 can be modeled by a normal distribution?

  • The sample sizes are equal.

    A

  • Both sample sizes are large enough to satisfy the normality condition.

    B

  • The population distributions are approximately normal.

    C

  • The population standard deviations are assumed equal.

    D

  • The sample sizes are less than 10% of the corresponding population sizes.

  • E

What questions, comments to you have about the experiences (150-250 Words)

My experience regarding love and intimate relationships is based on how I was raised by my family and traditions of American culture. Growing up, I always saw the family unit as a man and woman who made a commitment to each other, set goals together and would eventually have a family. Generationally, things are different now compared to when I married my husband. Today we have people identifying more with heterosexual, homosexual, bisexual, lesbian, gay, and transgender as well as interracial and interethnic relationships and marriages. Many girls dream about marrying someday, however, many people today are holding off getting married or choosing not to marry at all. When my husband and I chose to get married, we wanted to spend the rest of our lives making each other happy, have a family, and grow old together. We have watched our three children grow into amazing young adults and will be celebrating 25 years of marriage on New Years Day.
