A press conference is an important presentation of information that requires you to anticipate

questions and prepare possible responses. Your role as spokesperson is to write and present a

prepared statement, and prepare responses to no less than five questions you may be

expecting from the media.

Scenario:

Fast Food Restaurants, Inc.

A customer reported finding a severed human fingertip in soup purchased from Fast Food

Restaurants, Inc. The soup and sandwich package was purchased at a Fast Food Restaurant as a

take-out order. Your company has several quality controls in place to prevent accidents like

this. Local law enforcement is investigating. The customer has taken pictures and posted them

all over the Web, and made both libelous and slanderous comments against your company in

media interviews and blogs. The customer has never been an employee of Fast Food

Restaurants or its affiliates. You represent Fast Food Restaurants, Inc.

Find examples of each tool in the marketer's promotion toolbox in the current press, on the Internet, on TV, or another media source. The marketer's toolbox includes advertising, PR, personal selling, sales promotions, direct marketing, and viral marketing. Research and identify one example for each tool. To prepare for writing your first post, speculate on why the company chose that tool for their message and what they hoped to accomplish.

Write your first post. Be sure to clearly state each tool and provide a link or example so that your classmates know what it is that you are referring to. While most examples will be on-line, it is perfectly acceptable to include references to TV ads, newspaper articles, etc. For each tool you must include your thoughts on why the company chose that particular tool. What did it hope to accomplish? Do you believe that they are successful? Why or why not? The company operates a punch press to manufacture machine parts. It is a noisy operation. As a matter of fact, it is common knowledge in the plant that employees working in this location have to shout to be heard, even if you are right next to them. The employer decides to transfer a new employee to the department to monitor the punch press operation.
