Tommy Toadflax, the CEO and founder of Toadflax Enterprises, decides to hire an office manager for his growing business. Tommy places an ad in the local newspaper with the statement that “a four year Bachelor’s degree is required and an MBA is preferred” for this position. Other office managers in the same industry do not have or need an MBA, but Tommy feels that the MBA will make his company “look better” to prospective customers. Using a form he found on the internet, Tommy has all applicants submit a resume and complete a basic online job application that asks them their name, address, gender and date of birth. Tommy interviews 2 finalists for the position: a man, John Jessamine, and a woman, Mary Mistletoe, both of whom meet the minimum qualifications for the job. In addition to questions about their professional background and experience, Tommy chats with each one during the interview, asking whether they are married and about their children. Tommy hires John, citing the fact that he has an MBA. Does Mary have a case for discrimination under Title VII? Why or why not?

There have been several recent cases of a CEO or CFO resigning or being ousted for...

There have been several recent cases of a CEO or CFO resigning or being ousted for misrepresenting academic credentials. For instance, during February 2006, the CEO of RadioShack resigned by “mutual agreement” for inflating his educational background. During 2002, Veritas Software Corporation’s DFO resigned after claiming to have an MBA from Stanford University. On the other hand, Bausch & Lomb Inc.’s board refused the CEO’s offer to resign following a questionable claim to have an MBA.

Suppose you have been retained by the board of a company where the CEO has ‘overstated’ credentials. This company has a code of ethics and conduct which states that the employee should always do “the right thing.”

(a) What is the board of directors’ responsibility in such matters?

(b) What arguments would you make to ask the CEO to resign? What damage might be caused if the decision is made to retain the current CEO?

In the context of this course, you will be asked to address the issues/questions below for Marriott International, Inc. (MAR), www.marriott.com. When addressing the issues/questions, be sure to do so in the context of this course and Marriott. You have been appointed as the special assistant to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Arne Sorenson, who has asked you to address the following five situations:

(a) A fellow MBA alum from Lynn University, who now works in Admission at Lynn University would like to give each MBA student a benefit, which is programmed into the Lynn University ID card. This benefit would allow the student one night each month, depending on availability, for a room at the Marriott Courtyard for $40. Normally the room rate is $100 and the full cost of a night’s stay is $50. Discuss whether or not this would be feasible, i.e. Marriott is able to do this transaction without it being a donation.

(b) Marriott currently buys its ice machines from a manufacturer in China. A representative from a company in Vietnam is offering to sell them for 20% less than cost from the manufacturer in China. Discuss the issues that you would consider in deciding whether or not to accept this offer.

(c) The CEO wishes to develop an incentive plan for the hotel managers.

Before this is put into place, the CEO wishes you to make sure that budgeting

in the hotels is done correctly. He has asked you to submit a document discussing

the key points that you have learned in MBA 640. Be as thorough as possible.

(d) Marriott has only used absorption costing. The CEO has asked you

to explain the merits of using variable costing under certain circumstances.

(e) The CEO has asked you to explain how target costing/pricing would be used in

Marriott’s pricing policies.

In writing the background for this weekend’s homework assignment, I realized that I didn’t need to spend much time with the introduction of the company. Everyone knows Amazon, as a matter of fact, most of us shop on Amazon for many things that we use in our daily life. The company is one of the largest in the world and has over 500,000 employees. The CEO and founder of Amazon, Jeff Bezos, was interviewed at an awards ceremony in 2016 and this ten minute interview was recorded and posted on Youtube. The link appears below:

As you listen to the ten or so guiding principles that Mr. Bezos describes as being at the core of Amazon’s success, please:

#1)Identify the top two with which you most identify. Explain the reasons for your selections.

#2) Refer to the descriptions of the four types of organizational cultures, which appear at the end of Chapter 3 in your textbook. Based on this interview, would you evaluate the Amazon culture as one that focuses on adaptability, achievement, involvement, or consistency? Explain the reasons for your selection.
