In some plants a red pigment is synthesized from a colorless precursor by a single enzyme coded for by gene A. The red pigment can be changed into a purple pigment by another enzyme coded for by gene B. A cross between pure-breeding purple plants and white plants with the resulting F₂:

Michael has a box of colored balls. It contains two red balls, three green balls, one purple ball, two yellow balls, and five blue balls. Michael will perform an experiment which goes as follows.

First, a ball is drawn from the box at random, the color of the ball is noted (R for red, G for green, etc.), and the ball is set aside (i.e. not replaced into the box). The next stage of the experiment depends on the color of the ball Michael draws. If the ball is red, he will draw another ball and note its color. If the ball he draws at the beginning is green, he will draw five more balls, simultaneously and at random, and note how many of the balls he has drawn are red. 1. You are conducting an experiment to examine genetic variation and local adaptation in populations of Cypripedium montanum (Mountain Lady’s Slipper, Orchidaceae), which occur at high elevation in open woods in the Northwest US and Canada. You have two sites: one is in Oregon near Three Sisters and the other is in the North Cascades in Washington State.

1. How might you determine the extent of gene flow between your populations across latitude and whether one population has been through a bottleneck? Explain your answer.
   
2. How might you determine whether local adaptation has occurred, and what does this mean in terms of evolutionary ecology?
   
3. If you found that local adaptation occurred, nutrient availability might influence plant fitness, potentially causing this local adaption. Explain what types of nutrient availability are most likely to affect your plants and how you might test for nutrient limitation.
