Jurgen, a plumber, received a call from Pep, a contractor, who asked Jurgen to install pipes in a house that Pep was building in Riverdale, New York. Jurgen drove his van to Eugene’s Building Supply Shop and purchased 20 large copper pipes (approximately 24 inches in diameter.) He also purchased a brand-new ACME brand electric drill. Jurgen put the drill on the floor of the passenger side of the van and loaded the pipes in to the back of the van. As he was loading the van, Jurgen’s cell phone rang. He answered the call while he continued to close the doors of the van. Distracted by the phone call, Jurgen carelessly failed to close the backdoor completely. As Jurgen as driving to the construction site, he drove up a steep hill. The sharp angle of the road caused the back doors of the van to fly wide open. Several pipes then rolled out of the van and onto the road directly behind the van. Lee was riding his motorcycle (while complying with all traffic laws) immediately behind the van. When Lee saw the pipe rolling towards him, he swerved his motorcycle to the right and crashed into the curb of the sidewalk. Lee flew off his motorcycle and landed on Yvette, a pedestrian. Lee broke his arm and Yvette suffered a concussion.

(1) Can Lee recover from Jurgen for his injuries? Explain fully.

(2) Can Yvette recover from Jurgen for her concussion? Explain fully.

Who Pays Higher Gasoline Taxes?

Gasoline taxes are paid by sellers from the revenues they earn from their total sales. Thus to receive the same effective price for selling a given quantity of gasoline, a gasoline producer must charge an actual price that is higher by exactly the amount of the tax. Sellers supply a given quantity of gasoline, but at a price that is higher by the amount of the tax that they have to pay to the government.

Who truly pays the tax depends on the price elasticity of demand. The more inelastic is demand, the greater is the portion of the tax paid by consumers. Thus if the demand for gasoline was perfectly inelastic, the entire burden of the tax would fall on buyers. If demand was perfectly elastic, the entire burden would fall on sellers. Estimates of the price elasticity of demand for gasoline indicate values between 0.2 and 0.5. Based on the information in this example, if excise taxes increased by 10 percent, by what percentages may desired gasoline purchases decrease?

C&A purchases cases of chemicals from ABC who charges $ 30 per order and $ 50 per case. Each case has 5 bags of chemicals . C&A needs 2000 bags of chemicals per year. C&A’s annual holding costs are 30%. If C&A uses the Economic Order Quantity when placing orders. What is the annual ordering and holding cost per case of chemicals ?

Tom Terrific leases rafts from a supplier and rents them to customers who use them to float down the Illinois river.   Each day Tom leases 30 rafts from his supplier, at a cost of $15 per raft. He rents them to his customers for $30 per day. Rental demand follows a normal distribution, with a mean of 30 rafts and a standard deviation of 6 rafts. (Once generated, make all demands integers in your model using INT function – see podcast.)

Happiness in tourism, from a generalist perspective, focuses on two large interest groups, tourists - who seek worthwhile experiences and provide the maximum satisfaction - and the community that receives them - which is satisfied when there is a balance between the yearnings of the visitor, entrepreneurs, public managers and theirs. Thus, how to align the strategic needs of the tourist destination with those inherent in sustainable development and without harming local happiness? Discuss and give an examples

You have been talking to a student from the engineering program at UBC who has also taken up temporary residence at the North Pole in between active semesters of her studies. Because of her engineering background, the elves have given her the nickname “Casey Jones”. Casey scoffs at the α = .05 significance level that psychologists use in their hypothesis testing procedure. She tells you “That means you will, in the long run, make an error one time in twenty. If engineers had an error rate like that think of all the buildings and bridges and such that would be falling down! Why don’t you psychologists be more like engineers and set your error rate to something like one in a million instead of one in twenty?” Explain to Casey Jones why, in the context in which psychologists use it, an alpha level of one in twenty makes more sense than an alpha level of one in a million.
