A study was conducted to determine whether the drug AZT was effective in preventing serious opportunistic infection among individuals infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Individuals who were HIV-positive were randomly selected to either receive AZT treatment or a placebo (Non drug) treatment. Among the 145 individuals who received AZT, 24 developed serious opportunistic infections. Among the 137 individuals who were not treated with AZT, 45 developed serious opportunistic infections.

Complete the 2x2 table for these data.

1. What type of study is this? How do you know? Be specific.

2. What is the measure of association for this study type?

3. Calculate the association between AZT treatment and the development of opportunistic infections.

Explain what this measure of association means.

Bacterial Endotoxin Limit (EL) is defined as EL=K/m, where K=5 Endotoxin Units (EU) kg of the body weight or 5 EU/kg/hr;m= maximun bolus dose of a product, and the average human body weight is 70kg.The maximun Valid Dilution (MVD) of a product is equal to (EL x Concentration of the product)/sensivity of the lysate

Find the EL for a product whose maximun pediatric dose is 4 mg/ml/kg and concentration is 20mg/ml. Expressthe EL in EU/ml and EU/mg

If the sensivitty of the lysate is EU/ml, the Endotoxin soecification per monograph is EU/mg, the maximun bolus dose is 1ug/kg/min and the concentration is 0.2mg/ml.CAn the monograph specification be used as the Endotoxin limit? Explain

Calculate the MVD based on problem #2

You are a 35-year-old married individual with 2 children (ages 7 and 9). You are the primary source of family income with an annual income of $80,000. You are considering buying life insurance policy(s) to make sure, in case of your premature death, that your spouse has money to survive without you and they are able provide your children with college tuition needs. You would also like this policy to provide some form of savings/investment accumulation so that at some point in the future if the needs noted above are no longer required you would have some cash value to consider. Using the Human Life Value system, suggest how much life insurance you should consider, and which life insurance policy product(s) would be appropriate.

You are the human resource director for a company of 10,000 employees specializing in the production of swimming products. Due to the increased complexity of the manufacturing process, you are interested in improving the basic skills (e.g., math, reading, writing) of your employees. Two methods look promising—one involving web-based training and the other involving the use of workbooks. The web-based approach would cost about $600,000 and the workbooks about $300,000.

I need to design a study to help you make a decision. Describe your sample and your research method? How would you arrive at a conclusion about what to do? Do I factor in the cost

Strategy to Succeed and Homeostasis

Anatomy and Physiology can be a daunting (but also exciting!) course. We will cover every body system in this course and Anatomy and Physiology II. It’s a good idea to take a moment this week to self-reflect and get yourself organized for the upcoming term.

Throughout this course, we will often return to a common principle which regulates the human body: homeostasis. For your discussion post, provide one example of homeostasis within the body. Provide a brief 3-4 sentence explanation of the example you choose.

Additionally, identify and discuss 1-2 obstacles you may face with this course while learning anatomy and physiology. Examples may include being new to online learning, time management issues, personal or family commitments, test anxiety, etc.

Global Warming. Is it real, is it a threat, and who's to blame?

There are three issues here.

Is the Earth warming abnormally now, or is this current trend normal?

If the Earth is warming abnormally, is this a problem?

If the Earth is warming abnormally, can we attribute this to an overactive Sun, or to human activities.

This is a politically-charged issue. There is plenty of data, but the data can be interpreted in more than one way. The NASA Global Climate Web site (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. provides factual data and different interpretations of the data. The differing interpretations are the problem. We can react. Should we?

What do you think? Do you see any compelling evidence one way or the other? Please support your position with logical statements, concrete examples, and citations of applicable. Please try to avoid political diatribes.
