Unit 4: Discussion - Part 1
Question
Read the lecture for Chapter 4, and then answer the following:
Think of a brief example where you can use conditional
statements and write it in correct Java syntax. You may use
if-else-if statements or the switch statement. You may also use the
example you wrote in pseudo code for the discussion thread
2 during week 2 and convert it to Java, if you think it is
appropriate. Be mindful that we are not talking about
homework here. Do not post homework in this or any other discussion
thread. As always, show a screen capture of the
program running.
After writing your example, please explain if you think your
example could also be written in the other conditional statement
you did not chose. Explain why you think so, or why
not.

The mean number of sick days an employee takes per year is
believed to be about 10. Members of a personnel department do not
believe this figure. They randomly survey 8 employees. The number
of sick days they took for the past year are as follows: 11; 6; 13;
3; 11; 9; 8; 10. Let X = the number of sick days they took
for the past year. Should the personnel team believe that the mean
number is about 10? Conduct a hypothesis test at the 5%
level.
Note: If you are using a Student's t-distribution for the
problem, you may assume that the underlying population is normally
distributed. (In general, you must first prove that assumption,
though.)
1. State the distribution to use for the test. (Enter your answer in the form z or tdf where df is the degrees of freedom.)
2. What is the test statistic? (If using the z distribution round your answers to two decimal places, and if using the t distribution round your answers to three decimal places.)
3. What is the p-value? (Round your answer to four
decimal places.)
Explain what the p-value means for this problem. If
H0 is true, then there is a chance equal to the p-value that the average number of sick days for employees is at least as different from 10 as the mean of the sample is different from 10.If
H0 is false, then there is a chance equal to the p-value that the average number of sick days for employees is at least as different from 10 as the mean of the sample is different from 10. If
H0 is false, then there is a chance equal to the p-value the average number of sick days for employees is not at least as different from 10 as the mean of the sample is different from 10.If
H0 is true, then there is a chance equal to the p-value the average number of sick days for employees is not at least as different from 10 as the mean of the sample is different from 10.
4. Construct a 95% confidence interval for the true mean. Sketch the graph of the situation. Label the point estimate and the lower and upper bounds of the confidence interval. (Round your answers to three decimal places.)

Use your knowledge about solubility rules and reactions to write
(1) a balanced chemical
equation (molecular equation), (2) a total ionic equation, and (3)
a net ionic equation for the
reactions below. Include the appropriate phase for each species. Do
your experimental
observations match your predictions? Write neatly!

You have been asked by the director of finance to put together a plan to invest in other companies. Your plan will manage a mutual fund with a $20 million portfolio with a beta of 1.50. Assume that the risk-free rate is 4.50%, and the market risk premium is 5.50%. You expect to receive an additional $5 million, which you plan to invest in a number of stocks. After investing the additional funds, you want the fund’s required return to be 13%. What must the average beta of the new stocks added to the portfolio be to achieve the desired required rate of return? Attach your Excel file showing your calculations. In a Word document, explain the steps you used to arrive at your answers. What does your calculated beta mean to UPC? Should UPC be concerned about the use of betas in making investment decisions?
