Estimates of the number of cells in the human body vary over an order of magnitude. Indeed, the precise number varies from one individual to another and depends on whether you count bacterial cells. Here is one way to make an estimate.

a) Assume that an average cell has a diameter of 6 micrometers (6 x 10-6 meter), which means it has a volume of 100 cubic micrometers. How many cells are there in a cubic centimeter?

b.) Estimate the number of cells in a liter, using the fact that a cubic centimeter equals a milliliter.

c.) Estimate the number of cells in a 70-kilogram (154-pound) person, assuming that the human body is 100% water (actually it is about 60 - 70% water) and that 1 liter of water weighs 1 kilogram.

People generally tend to have strong feelings about the existential, humanistic and positive psychology approaches. Some consider them more holistic because they can embrace the more spiritual and esoteric aspects of the human condition. Others consider them unstructured and unscientific.

What do you think?

Discuss

Post a thoughtful and reflective argument explaining the advantages and the disadvantages of the existential, humanistic and positive approaches to studying personality. Be thorough and give specific detail.

You may draw on the material in the text, but make sure to add your own thoughts and ideas about the perspectives in this module. How do they contribute to a better understanding of human personality and behavior? How do they fall short in doing so? How are they useful? Are they potentially damaging in any circumstances?

9A A personnel researcher has designed a questionnaire and she would like to estimate the average time to complete the questionnaire. Suppose she samples 100 employees and finds that the mean time to take the test is 27 minutes with a standard deviation of 4 minutes. Construct a 90% confidence interval for the mean time to complete the questionnaire. Also, write a short explanation about the findings to the human resources director of your company summarizing the results. – Use Excel for this analysis.

9B. For the problem in part A, the human resources director wants to know whether these is sufficient sample evidence to conclude that the average time to complete the questionnaire is not 27 minutes. Set up the hypotheses (in statistical terms) and, based only on the confidence interval you have constructed in part A, what would you conclude regarding the hypotheses?

"Cultural Relativism and Human Rights" Please respond to the following: In King’s speech, he claimed: “America has defaulted on this promissory note insofar as her citizens of color are concerned.” Then proclaimed: “So we have come to cash this check…” Most people recognize that he was not talking about money, but he was talking about certain human rights that should be granted to all U.S. citizens. Discuss at least two of those rights and comment on the extent to which you believe those rights have been provided for citizens of color in today’s America. Provide reasons and examples to support your view. Most people who have heard or read this speech agree that it is eloquent, passionate, and persuasive. Could a moral relativist have been as eloquent and persuasive? Provide a rationale for your views.

Write a response to the following passage in your opinion

Plato laid the foundations of Western philosophy and science. Alfred North Whitehead once noted: "the safest general characterization of the European philosophical tradition is that it consists of a series of footnotes to Plato." Plato's argument that non-physical (but substantial) forms (or ideas) represent the most accurate reality.

Locke is among the most influential political philosophers of the modern period. In the Two Treatises of Government, he defended the claim that men are by nature free and equal against claims that God had made all people naturally subject to a monarch.  Locke's political theory was founded on social contract theory. Locke believed that human nature is characterized by reason and tolerance. Like Hobbes, Locke believed that human nature allowed people to be selfish.

1. Lab Review:

A) Explain why– control E. coli cells cannot grow on LBA+amp and LBA+amp+X-Gal.

B) Name a procedure which can replace the heat shock process and achieve the same goal:

C) If you used the pBLU plasmid as a vector to carry a desirable human gene into E. coli recipient cells. The insertion site is inside the β-galactosidase gene on the p-BLU plasmid. After the transformation, you plate the cells on LBA+amp+X-Gal to screen for E. coli cells with the desirable gene. You saw both blue and white colonies on the plate. Which type of colonies carry the desirable human gene?
A. White        B. Blue             C. both             D. neither one

Explain WHY?

After reading one of the classic studies in social psychology conducted by Stanley Milgram (1963) and the current Ethical Guidelines for the Treatment of Human Subjects in Research (American Psychological Association), please answer the following questions:

1. Given the events chronicled in Milgram’s experiment and the ethical guidelines for the use of human subjects in psychological research, could this study be conducted today or would it be in violation of the APA’s ethical guidelines?

2. Weigh the benefits of the study versus the benefits of the ethical guidelines. If you were the researcher trying to get this study approved by the APA ethics board, what would your arguments be for approval by the APA.

3. In your opinion, are there times in which the APA ethical guidelines should be bypassed in favor of the possible value of the knowledge gained by the study’s results?

Metaphysics concerns inquiries into the nature of reality. Both Plato and Descartes develop metaphysical systems that are classified as dualisms. Likewise both are considered to be metaphysical realists, which means that there is a reality external to the influence of the human mind. Plato believes that reality is composed of a realm of becoming that is constantly changing and a realm of being that contains eternal, unchanging Forms that infuse the world of becoming. Human beings, according to Plato, are an amalgam of a material body that constantly changes and an immortal psyche. A little more than two thousand years later, Descartes will propose that all reality is composed of two substances---body and mind. The Matrix films consider both Platonic and Cartesian dualisms. What is the appeal of a dualistic metaphysics? Do you find it plausible? Why or why not? Are there particular implications that add credence to your position?
