The Hollywood Hat Company produces a top hat, the Star Topper that sells for $130. Operating income for 2018 is as follows:

Hollywood Hat Company would like to increase its profitability over the next year by at least 20%. To do so, the company is considering the following options:

Replace a portion of its variable labor with an automated machining process. This would result in a 20% decrease in variable cost per unit but a 15% increase in fixed costs. Sales would remain the same.

Spend $50,000 on a new advertising campaign, which would increase sales by 10%.

Increase both selling price by $10 per unit and variable costs by $8 per unit by using a higher-quality silk material in the production of its hats. The higher-priced hat would cause demand to drop by approximately 10%.

Add a second manufacturing facility that would double Hollywood Hat’s fixed costs but would increase sales by 60%.

A person was admitted to hospital for a car accident and sustained a fracture in his right arm and left leg with burns of total burn surface area of 68% and injury in his head and neck due to accident but with no fracture in them. He stayed in coma for 3 days to control his situation and the severity of brain injury is measured by the Glasgow Coma Scale and found to be 14. Competitive strategy as we have understood it so far, has followed a two step process; the first step was creating value defined as the difference between the customer's willingness to pay (based on their desires) and the cost of supplying the good (based on the firm's value chain choices), and the second step of splitting this "value" created between the customer (appropriated as consumer surplus) and supplier firm (appropriated as profits). Our current module explored some ideas on conditions that drove the appropriation of value in a competitive environment. A recurrent theme in value appropriation is that asymmetry in bargaining power between the players drives who appropriates how much of the value created in a competitive situation, with above average profits flowing to the party with the asymmetry in its favor. For this module test, write up a one page note on the kinds of asymmetry in play in each of our lecture sessions - structural economies of scale, resource based view of strategy, customer captivity and the many contrived barriers to entry. A good way to keep this simple will be to write this down as a table with the following columns (with an example): Party 1 (Positive) : The Supplier Party 2 (Negative) : The Customer Type of asymmetry : Monopoly Power with effective barrier to entry Source of asymmetry : Economies of Scale with minimum efficient scale a significant proportion of market size discouraging new entrants. A radical new recycling process

The biggest threat to our planet are humans, due to our waste and pollution. Plastic is one major issue, as it pollutes our planet on a daily basis and the predictions are that in 2050, there will be more plastic in our oceans than fishes. In order to prevent that from happening, IBM Researchers have invented the VolCat, which will make the recycling of plastic more efficient. This new recycling concept will break down all kinds of plastic, regardless if it is colored or not, clean or dirty. Hence, households won’t have to separate and recycle their plastic at home anymore, since the VolCat will use all types of plastic together. VolCat is a catalytic chemical process, which dissolves polyester plastics. Once it is digested, it can then be reused for new plastic manufacturing machines (IBM Research, n.d.).

Heavy Metal Free Batteries:

IBM is currently working on new battery technologies that are free of heavy metals such as cobalt, nickel, lithium, and other metal types. The main objectives of this project are to lower the cost of batteries, charge faster, higher power density, higher energy density, better efficiency, and lower flammability of batteries currently being used. They expect these batteries to be used in electronics, airplanes, cars, and any other product that requires mobile power. They are currently working with Mercedes-Benz Research and Development, Central Glass and battery manufacturers to develop this technology (Na, 2019).
