Competitive strategy as we have understood it so far, has followed a two step process; the first step was creating value defined as the difference between the customer's willingness to pay (based on their desires) and the cost of supplying the good (based on the firm's value chain choices), and the second step of splitting this "value" created between the customer (appropriated as consumer surplus) and supplier firm (appropriated as profits). Our current module explored some ideas on conditions that drove the appropriation of value in a competitive environment.
A recurrent theme in value appropriation is that asymmetry in bargaining power between the players drives who appropriates how much of the value created in a competitive situation, with above average profits flowing to the party with the asymmetry in its favor.
For this module test, write up a one page note on the kinds of asymmetry in play in each of our lecture sessions - structural economies of scale, resource based view of strategy, customer captivity and the many contrived barriers to entry.
A good way to keep this simple will be to write this down as a table with the following columns (with an example):
Party 1 (Positive) : The Supplier
Party 2 (Negative) : The Customer
Type of asymmetry : Monopoly Power with effective barrier to entry
Source of asymmetry : Economies of Scale with minimum efficient scale a significant proportion of market size discouraging new entrants.
The same can also be described as an asymmetry between the firm and its potential competitors (even if it is secondary) and listing them both as separate line items is okay.
Submit the assignment as an editable Word document in Blackboard like you did for the first module.

In this final entry into your Nurse E-Portfolio for this course, you continue to have opportunities for reflective practice. In this entry you expand your understanding and knowledge of nutrition. Using the e-portfolio format, answer the following questions. Make sure you spend some time thinking about the answers to these questions before writing.
Since your mid-course entry have you made any changes in your 1-5 rating where 5 represents the most "healthy eater." What number would you give yourself now?
Did your rating change? If so, in what direction and in what way? What adjustments to your diet, if any, did you make?
What two important nutritional principles or concepts have you learned and will always remember? What is their impact on your delivery of quality safe nursing care?
Select one assignment that you submitted in this course that you believe is your "best work." Explain why you selected this assignment. Attach the assignment to your e-portfolio.
Submit your completed assignment by following the directions linked below. Please check the Course Calendar for specific due dates.
Save your assignment as a Microsoft Word document. (Mac users, please remember to append the ".docx" extension to the filename.) The name of the file should be your first initial and last name, followed by an underscore and the name of the assignment, and an underscore and the date. An example is shown below:

Eating Disorder Assignment (Nutrition An Applied Approach Fifth Edition by Janice Thompson and Melinda Manore)
IN Depth Assignment Eating Disorders Read pages 413-423
Listed are two teens with Eating Disorders. Write a 150-word paragraph for both teens that describe possible signs of the disorder that other people might notice. Make sure to include the health consequences that each teen might have. Also, If these two were your friends how would you help them?
Mary is 14. She is 5’7” tall and weighs 110-pounds, she looks in the mirror and sees a fat person. At lunch with her parents she tells them that she is not hungry and she will eat later. However, Mary does not eat later because she is starving herself in silence. She has not told anyone. She has eaten less than 500 calories per day for the last 2 weeks.
Sam is 17. He is a wrestler. Sam is the best in his weight class. However, if he gains 5 pounds he will get bumped up a class and then will have to wrestle larger athletes. Sam exercises excessively and he takes laxatives to lose weight. He has thrown up a few times after he eats fast food with his friends. Sam does not eat or drink the day before he gets weighed- in for the match. Immediately after weigh-in, Sam eats excessively for energy before he wrestles.

Your employer, a mid-sized human resources management company, is considering expansion into related fields, including the acquisition of Temp Force Company, an employment agency that supplies word processor operators and computer programmers to businesses with temporary heavy workloads. Your employer is also considering the purchase of Bigger staff & McDonald (B&M), a privately held company owned by two friends, each with 5 million shares of stock. B&M currently has free cash flow of $24 million, which is expected to grow at a constant rate of 5%. B&M's financial statements report short-term investments of $100 million, debt of $200 million, and preferred stock of $50 million. B&M's weighted average cost of capital (WACC) is 11%. Using this information answer the following question:
You have just learned that B&M has undertaken a major expansion that will change its expected free cash flows to -10 million in 1 year, $20 million in 2 years, and $35 million in 3 years. After 3 years, free cash flow will grow at a rate of 5%. No new debt or preferred stock was added; the investment was financed by equity from the owners. Assume the WACC is unchanged at 11% and that there are still 10 million shares of stock outstanding.
(1) What is the company's horizon value (its value of operations at year3)? What is its current value of operations (at time 0)
(2) What is its estimated intrinsic value of equity on a price-per-share basis?

Think about the clinical environment where you currently practice or one you are familiar and analyze opportunities for waste reduction.
Review the IHI resources(http://www.ihi.org/sites/search/pages/results.aspx?k=waste&start1=1 and Hosaapital Inpatient Waste Identification Tool (http://myresource.phoenix.edu/secure/resource/NSG451r2/IHI_Hospital_Inpatient_Waste_Identification_Tool_White_Paper_2011.pdf)to better understand some of the ways you can affect waste as a nurse and a nurse in a leadership role.
Format: Provide a summary of your analysis in the findings column of the table within 200-250 words (single space) communication that you would submit to frontline nurse managers/administrators.
Maintain a scholarly/professional tone - write in third person, so that the focus of the communication is objective and not subjective in presentation (see APA guidelines item #6) correct grammar, spelling, punctuation, sentence structure, APA formatted citations and references, and word limits (20)

Jimmy is the CEO of News Corp. His son, Johnny, runs Television Inc. One day Jimmy suggests that Johnny sell Television Inc. to News Corp. Jimmy and Johnny work together to radically inflate the value of Television Inc. Jimmy brings a proposal to the Board of Directors to buy Television Inc. for $500 million dollars even though the corporation is only worth $2 million. Modeling with Functions
In this course you have learned the characteristics of different types of functions and have practiced solving application problems involving modeling with these functions. For each scenario below, decide what type of function would best model the situation. Explain why you chose that type of function. Show your work in writing the function to model the situation. Be sure to state what the independent variable represents. Then use your model to answer the questions for that scenario.
Susan decides to take a job as a transcriptionist so that she can work part-time from home. To get started, she has to buy a computer, headphones, and some special software. The equipment and software together cost her $1000. The company pays her $0.004 per word, and Susan can type 90 words per minute.
What type of function would be best to model this scenario? Choose one of the following: linear, quadratic, polynomial of degree 3 or higher, rational, exponential, or logarithmic. Explain why you chose this answer.
Write a formula for the function you chose to model this scenario. What does the independent variable in your function represent?
How many hours must Susan work to break even, that is, to make enough to cover her $1000 start-up cost? Show how you found the answer.
If Susan works 4 hours a day, 3 days a week, how much will she earn in a month? Show how you found the answer.
