Background: Based on the National Center of Health Statistics, the proportion of babies born at low birth weight (below 2,500 grams) in the United States is roughly .078, or 7.8% (based on all the births in the United States in the year 2002). A study was done in order to check whether smoking by pregnant women increases the risk of low birth weight. In other words, the researchers wanted to check whether the proportion of babies born at low birth weight among women who smoked during their pregnancy is higher than the proportion in the general population. The researchers followed a sample of 400 women who had smoked during their pregnancy and recorded the birth weight of the newborns. Based on the data, the p-value was found to be .119.

1. Veterinarians often use nonsteriodal anti-inflammatory drugs to treat lameness in horses. A group of veterinary researchers wanted to find out how widespread the practice was in the United States. They obtained a list of all veterinarians treating large animals, including horses. They sent questionaires to all the veterinarians on the list. Such a survey is called a census. The response rate was 40%. What is the population of interest? A. Population of interest is all veterinarians treating large animals. B. The population of all veterinarians in the United States treating large animals, including horses. C. The population of interest is all veterinarians. D. All of the answer choices are correct. 2. Researchers have noted that children who learn to play a musical instrument through taking lessons have higher average SAT scores, higher average GPA and higher average class rank. The various measures of academic success described are examples of: A. confounding variables B. Response variables C. None of the answer choices is correct D. Explanatory variables 3. Each month, the census bureau mails survey forms to 250,000 households asking questions about the people living in the household and about such things as motor vehicles and housing costs. Telephone calls are made to households that don't return the form. In one month, responses were obtained from 240,000 of the households contacted. If the household does not return the form and cannot be contacted by telephone, this is: A. undercoverage B. Simple random sampling C. volunteer bias D. nonresponse

This is one question with part (a) and part (b) being the solution to the problem.

This problem is based upon two separate, distinct industries, each of which has ten companies.  Industry X has companies A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, and J.  Industry Y has companies M, N, O, P, Q, R, S, T, U, and V.  These two industries are completely unrelated. There is no, absolutely no competition between any of the companies in Industry X with any of the companies in Industry Y.  This question is to examine the degree of market concentration, and hence the competitive nature, within each industry.

Retrieved from http://www.choosemyplate.gov/older-adults Mrs. Jenkins is a 70-year-old patient at the primary care provider for a routine visit. As you are gathering data prior to showing her into an examination room, you note her height and weight, of 65 inches and 101 pounds. Calculate Mrs. Jenkins’ BMI and interpret the result. Discuss two additional specific assessments you would perform, and why the information you obtain in these assessments might be a concern to the RN. Question 7: Balance of Payments

To answer this question, you must obtain data from the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA), on the U.S. balance of payment (BOP) tables. Go to interactive tables to obtain annual data for 2019 (Note: the default setting is for quarterly data). It may take you some time to become familiar with how to navigate the website. You need only refer to Table 1 on the BOP accounts. Using the BOP data, compute the following for the United States (rounding to the nearest billion):

(a) Trade balance (TB), net factor income from abroad (NFIA), net unilateral transfers (NUT), and current account (CA)

(b) Financial account (FA)

(c) Official settlements balance (OSB), referred to as “U.S. official reserve assets” and “Foreign official assets in the U.S.”

(d) Nonreserve financial account (NRFA)
(e) Balance of payments (BOP). Note that this may not equal zero because of statistical

discrepancy. Verify that the discrepancy is the same as the one reported by the BEA.

(f) Gross national expenditure (GNE), gross national income (GNI), and gross national dis- posable income (GNDI)

(g) In macroeconomics, we often assume the U.S. economy is a closed economy when building models that describe how changes in policy and shocks affect the economy. Based on the previous data (BOP and GDP), do you think this is a reasonable assumption to make? Do international transactions account for a large share of total transactions (involving goods and services, or income) involving the United States?

Pick any 2 questions and answer it (answer should be half page long per question):

1. The Information Revolution, an economic restructuring comparable to the Agricultural Revolution and the Industrial Revolution, has brought about new questions of social interest. Elaborate.

2. Think about the trends in what and how goods and services are produced in the U.S. and global economies. Do you think that at some future time, there will be no jobs in the United States and all the jobs will be in developing economies?

3. Compare the scale of agricultural production in the advanced and developing economies.

4. China is currently the world’s second largest economy. It is predicted to surpass the U.S. to become the biggest economy in the not-too-distant future. How does this development influence the strategic balance and the position of the United States?

5. In 1990, Congress imposed a luxury tax on yachts costing more than $100,000, along with similar taxes on a handful of other luxury goods. It was estimated that the new taxes would yield more than $31 million in revenue in 1991. However, the tax actually generated a bit more than half the amount, $16.6 million. Several years later, the Joint Economic Committee estimated that the tax on yachts had led to a loss of 7,600 jobs in the U.U. boating industry. Taking account of lost income taxes and increased unemployment benefits, the U.S. government actually came out $7.6 million behind in fiscal 1991 as a result of its luxury taxes- almost $ 39 million worse than the initial projection. Congress repealed the luxury tax on yachts in 1993. What went wrong?
