Two buckets are lying on a table. Bucket #1 has five red and two yellow balls in it. Bucket #2 contains three red and four yellow balls. In all of the questions below, the buckets start with this composition.

a. Two balls are drawn at random from bucket #1. What is the probability that one is red and one is yellow?

b. One ball is drawn at random from bucket #1 and placed into bucket #2. One ball is then drawn from bucket #2. What is the probability that this ball is red?

c. Balls are drawn one by one from bucket #2 until a red ball is drawn. What is the probability that the first red ball is drawn on the third draw.

The university is concerned about a rise in the number of academic offences committed by undergraduate students. They believe that students do not understand the seriousness of such offences. They develop a course that outlines the potential consequences for students who are involved in academic offenses (e.g. cheating, plagiarism, etc.) in order to deter students’ acceptability of committing these offenses. All first year students are required to take the course. To assess the effectiveness of the course in deterring (or reducing) acceptability of academic offences, before the course starts, a random sample of 150 first year students are asked to complete a questionnaire that includes a scale to assess their views on the acceptability of committing an academic offence. After the course is over, a different sample of 156 first year students complete the same questionnaire. Scores on the scale range from 0 to 25 (interval/ratio measure), with a mean (X") and standard deviation (s) determined for the scores in each sample. Higher scores reflect GREATER acceptability of academic offences.

(a) What are the null hypothesis and alternate or research hypothesis that you would state in order to assess the effectiveness of the course in deterring acceptability of academic offences?

(b) What sampling distribution would you use, and what formula(s) would you use?

(c) Given an alpha level of 0.05, what is the critical value of the test statistic?

(d) If the value of the obtained test statistic is +1.754, what would you conclude about the effectiveness of the course? Be sure to state the conclusion in statistical terms, and in words.

Use the Bureau of Labor Statistics website to search for income data on the occupation of...

Use the Bureau of Labor Statistics website to search for income data on the occupation of 15-1212 Information Security Analysts. The BLS has wage information for hundreds of jobs and data can also be found by state.

Once you arrive at the site, complete the following steps to gather the data you need to answer the questions.

Step 1

  • Search for information on the occupation (15-1212 Information Security Analysts) by clicking on national wage data 800 occupations. This will take you to the Occupational Employment Statistics page.
  • Scroll to the bottom of that page for a table listing the major and sub-job categories. Note in the first column there is an occupation code. For example, accountants and auditors have the code 13-2011 and are listed under banking and financial operations.
  • Click on the job title to find earnings information. There you will find mean wages as well as percentiles and the 5-number summary.
  • Compare the mean and median pays. For example, the mean pay for accountants was $78,800 and the median was $70,500.
  • Record the information on percentiles, the 5-number summary, the mean and the median.

Step 2

Include the following in your discussion post:

  • Discuss your interpretation of the statistics you recorded in Part 1.
    • Percentiles
    • Mean
    • Median
  • How different are the salaries shown in the map of states?
    • What is the range for your state?
    • Would you move to another state based on this data?
    • What other statistics would you want to know before making that decision?
  • What effect do the lowest paid and highest paid states have on the calculation of the mean and median for the United States?
  • Suppose you were asked by a potential employer to request a salary. Which is the best measure to use to find “average” earnings for your occupation? Explain your answer.

Conduct your own experiment by rolling a standard die.

(a) List the possible outcomes. (Enter your answers as a comma-separated list.)

(b) Perform the experiment 36 times. Make a table to record your results.

This answer has not been graded yet.

(c) Find the experimental probability for each outcome.

This answer has not been graded yet.

(d) Find the theoretical probability for each outcome. (Enter your probabilities as fractions.)

probability of rolling a 1
probability of rolling a 2
probability of rolling a 3
probability of rolling a 4
probability of rolling a 5
probability of rolling a 6

(e) Compare the experimental and theoretical probabilities. Are your results the same? Explain.

2. You are given a bag with 8 green marbles, 4 blue marbles, 14 yellow marbles, and 12 red marbles. Find the theoretical probability of each random event. (Enter your probabilities as fractions.)

(a) Drawing a green marble

(b) Drawing a red marble

(c) Drawing a marble that is not yellow
