Let’s consider the dissociation of phosphoric acid H3PO4. All four possible protonation states, with H number from zero to three, must co-exist in equilibrium.
H3PO4 <-> H2PO4- <-> HPO42- <-> PO43-
pK1=2 pK2=7 pK3=12
Find relative populations of all four states at the pH of the human blood, ~7.4.

Two electrons in the same atom both have n = 6 and ℓ = 2. Assume the electrons are distinguishable so that interchanging them defines a new state.
(a) How many states of the atom are possible considering the quantum numbers these two electrons can have?
(b) How many states would be possible if the exclusion principle were inoperative?

An electron is bound to a finite potential well. (a) If the width of the well is 4 a.u., determine numerically the minimum depth (in a.u.) such that there are four even states. Give the energies of all states including odd ones to at least 3 digits. (b) Repeat the calculation, but now keep the depth of the well at 1 a.u., determine the minimum width (in a.u.)

We demonstrated that if A is recognized by a nondeterministic
finite state automaton, it can be recognized by a deterministic
finite-state automaton, by giving an algorithm for constructing a
machine M' that is deterministic and accepts the same language as a
nondeterministic machine M.
By the construction algorithm we used, how many states will M' have
if M has n states. Justify your answer

"Liberals believe that states should have a very small role in a Global/International Political Economy. According to this belief, the only job that states should have is to set the conditions in which markets can function as freely as possible."
Do you agree or disagree with this Liberal view? Why or why not?

If the states in North America, Western Europe, and East Asia all were to meet the target of providing 0.7 percent of GNP in foreign assistance, what might the effects be? How much additional aid would be made available? To whom would it likely go? What effects might it have on the recipient states and on economic development overall?

Here is a census for an apportionment problem in a hypothetical country comprised of four states. • State of Ambivalence: 8,000; • State of Boredom: 9,000; • State of Confusion: 24,000; • State of Depression: 59,000. (100,000 total) Assume that the house has h = 10 seats to apportion to these four states. What apportionment is determined by the method of: Hamilton, Adam, Jefferson, Webster.

2. Molly Baker, a 22-year-old patient, presents to the clinic with the diagnosis of allergic rhinitis. She states that she develops paroxysmal sneezing, clear nasal drainage and congestion, watery, red eyes, and nasal itching from the late spring until the first frost in the fall. She states that she has a dry cough and voice hoarseness. She complains of feeling extremely tired, unable to sleep at night, and having difficulty concentrating on her collegiate course work. (Learning Objective 5)
The patient states that she sees an increase in her symptoms when the mold count is high. She also states that she sneezes when she is around her cat and the cat sleeps with her at night. The patient agrees to pharmacotherapy and avoidance therapy. The physician orders for her to take over-the-counter cetirizine (Zyrtec) from late spring until the first frost in fall.

Consider this: Four states in our union have "legalized marijuana for recreational use"...Alaska, Colorado, Oregon and Washington. Furthermore, there are 19 other states that have some form of legalization or decriminalization laws currently on their books. With that said, many organizations test for "illegal substances" either prior to or during employment. There are those that even test for tobacco use, considering tobacco to be harmful. If evidence of drug use is found in an employee's system, an employee might be fired regardless of the state laws or prior legal precedent. If the company declares tobacco to be off limits to its employees, the employee may be fired if found to be violating the company policy on tobacco use.
1) Is it fair to penalize the employee who is a "recreational user" who, while visiting one of the four states listed above, used marijuana? Why? Be specific.
2) Tobacco is legal in all states yet there are organizations that will terminate employment if tobacco is found in an employee drug screen. How can a company possibly terminate an employee for using a substance that is completely legal?
