Doctors and scientists now have the ability to sequence a person's DNA to look for abnormalities. One common example of genetic testing is screening for an extra chromosome 21 in human fetuses. This test is used to detect if a child will have Down's Syndrome. Do some research and describe another example of genetic testing. What specifically do they look for in the DNA? How can genetic testing be beneficial and how far should we take it?

Explain the regulation of gene expression in eukaryotic cells.

Discuss mechanisms by which gene expression may be altered.
How do these alterations induce cancer-causing mutations in cell DNA?

Explain how cancer is formed.

Describe genetic changes found in cancer cells and how these changes lead to alterations in cell behavior.

Determine whether proteome data can be utilized in genetic disorder diagnosis.

Relate the Human Genome Project data to the analysis of cancer genes.

Exercise 5: Let's Build a Moon Base

Prompt: One day in the future we will decide to establish a colony on the Moon. Where should we put it?

Analysis Directions: Make a list of the advantages and disadvantages of locating such a human habitat on poles. Should it be in a crater the near side, the far side, or at the? Highland? Maria?

Also, what site would be best for doing visible-light and radio astronomy from observatories on the Moon? Comment on each other’s lists.

Focus your discussion on ONE of the following topics:

  1. Describe at least 2 benefits and 2 drawbacks there might be for animal cells (including humans) to make their own food through photosynthesis.
  2. Explain which cells, tissues, or organs should be modified to lead to successful photosynthesis in animals or humans. Discuss how these compare to a plant's leaves.
  3. Describe the process of photosynthesis to explain at least 1 requirement for photosynthesis that would need to be considered for chloroplasts to function in an animal or a human.

Blake, who is married and the father of two, is 30 years old and expects to continue to work until the age of 65. He earns $85,000 per year and expects annual salary increases of 2% over his working life. He also expects inflation to be 3% during that time. His personal risk-free discount rate is 6%, his consumption is 20%, and his marginal tax rate is 28%. Determine Blake's human life value.

Ben Santer showed that if atmospheric temperature increases are due to the sun then it is stratosphere (upper layer) that should show the increase in temperature, but his data shows that the current increases in global temperature are in the troposphere (lower layer).

T or F

With reference to the above question, the increase in temperature in the troposphere especially within the last 75 years is primarily due to

the sun

random fluctuations in temperature

events unrelated to human activity

increases in CO2 levels by humans burning fossil fuels

Human population size underlies nearly every environmental problem that the planet faces. The environmental problems I am referring to are global warming, deforestation, water and air pollution to name a few. China is noteworthy in establishing limits on the number of children a couple can have as a way of limiting population growth in their nation. Should we consider similar measures in the United States given the growing numbers of people in our country and the idea that natural resources are limited?

11. Which ofthe following statements correctly describesthe difference between ATP and the
nucleotides used during DNA synthesis?
A. ATP contains three high-energy bonds; the nucleotides havetwo.
B. The nucleotides have the sugar deoxyribose; ATP has the sugar ribose.
C. The nucleotides have two phosphate groups; ATP has three phosphate groups.
D. ATP isfound only in human cells; the nucleotides are found in all animal and plant cells.
