*******Information to know prior to the questions: The product being offered in fresh produce sold in a rural area in the midwest. I'm unsure how to answer these questions relating to the topic so any help would be much appreciated. Thank you!!*******

Part I: The own-price elasticity of demand.

Questions:

  1. What can you tell about the own-price elasticity of demand for the product being offered? Why?

  2. How does price elasticity of demand help in business decision making (pricing decision)?

  3. List some strategies to reduce the own-price elasticity of demand.

Part II: Supply

Questions:

  1. Get to know the competition. Since we can observe only one determinant of supply - the number of sellers- evaluate how large the supply is, in other words, evaluate the degree of competition among sellers in the market being served. Who are the competitors? Do not forget about online competitors.

  2. How does market demand and supply affect market prices?

Here is the case:
When trying to decide what type of small business to open, I came to the conclusion that it would be beneficial in my area to open a shop that would sell fresh produce in a small rural town in central Illinois. The town could immensely benefit from a business like this one, as the townspeople currently travel to neighboring counties to obtain these items, and that can be a bit of an inconvenience for some individuals.

Assume you are the owner of a small apparel manufacturer with approximately fifty employees. Your
business is located in a blighted area of town where the jobs you provide are important, but the
insurance costs of doing business there are significant, too. Recently, fire and theft coverage has
escalated in cost, but it is essential to protect your premises and inventory, and local ordinances require
that you purchase it. You have customarily provided health coverage for your employees and their
families, which many of them would not be able to afford if they had to bear the cost themselves. You
would like to continue providing this coverage—though, due to your small employee base, you are not
legally obligated to do so—but these costs have risen too. Finally, you would prefer to stay in this
location, because you feel an obligation to your workers, most of whom live nearby, and because you feel
welcomed by the community itself, which includes some longtime customers. Still, you may be forced to
choose between paying for your employee health care costs and moving to a different area of town
where fire and theft coverage would not cost as much.

  • How will you make the decision within an ethical framework?
  • What will you, your business, and your employees gain and lose based on what you decide? What, if anything, do you and your business owe the community of which you have been a part for so long?

Conflict in an Emergency Situation: A Case Study

You are the director of Public Health Preparedness in Puerto Rico. In 2017, Puerto Rico was hit by Hurricane Maria. Puerto Rico has major infrastructure deficiencies, and the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority has been unable to re-install power to remote areas. Six months after the hurricane hit the island, 100,000 Puerto Ricans are still without power (vox.com downloaded on 5/14/18). On Saturday morning, a social worker calls to inform you that a 31-year-old resident, Raul Ortega Gonzalez, has remained in his family house without power and is in need of surgery for a painful hernia. A visiting nurse stopped by his home this morning and recommended that he be taken to a hospital in San Juan to receive the treatment he needs. He is refusing to leave his home as he believes that his home will be vandalized if left empty. The nurse called on the state social worker to speak with the Ortega Gonzalez family and the ambulance service to transport Raul to San Juan. This family has weathered many storms, and they have moved to New Jersey from Puerto Rico to allow their younger children to remain in school while Puerto Rico regains power. The family plans to return to the family home at the end of the school year. The family does not understand why the surgery cannot wait the one month left of the school year and are infuriated that the state would impose its values on their family. Furthermore, how can the state not understand Raul’s concerns with the vandalism that has affected the area?

As the director of Public Health Preparedness, you receive a call from the ambulance service staff later in the morning, and they inform you that they are not wasting their time with Raul Ortega Gonzalez—that the family can do with him what they choose. The head nurse is terribly upset as she believes that his life is being placed at risk and insists that the ambulance service must take Raul to the hospital.

  1. Identify the sources for this conflict.
  2. Why has the conflict escalated?
  3. What would you do to assist in the negotiations with Mr. Ortega Gonzalez?

Essay 2: Gender, Race, and Ackright: How We Oppress Ourselves

Notes:

As we continue to move forward in the course, we are starting to change the subject from strictly an issue of race, and have shifted to the subject of sex, and the system behind “gender roles.”

Now, I want to move the class into the subject of current pop culture, specifically in regards to Hip Hop, and focus on ideas of sexuality (both physically and physiologically) and gender roles within the hip-hop community/aesthetic.

The next essay that we are reading for this week is by the Journalist/Feminist Activist/Teacher/Satirist, Joan Morgan. I feel like this assignment is important because I love hip-hop (among a couple other genres), but I am constantly confronted with the issue of misogyny and the oppression of the female body. Because of that, I think we should write about it. So first, read this excerpt:

“From Fly-Girls to Bitches and Hos” Joan Morgan

This essay is an excerpt from her book, When Chickenheads Come Home to Roost: A Hip-Hop Feminist Breaks Down (1999)where Morgan continues to discuss different themes regarding gender and race oppression, or the perpetuation of hatred and death with each chapter of the book.

BUT one thing that we should keep in mind as we read this very stimulating article, is that it is somewhat outdated. Yes the themes of systematic racial oppression in America that she discusses, and the violence embedded in hip-hop culture is still very real, BUT there has been a lot of change in tastes and trends since this book was written in ’99; that’s almost 20 years of scene evolution! And, although a person could probably still argue that hip-hop contains themes consistent with those that Morgan discusses, in 2017 the climate has changed, and people of all genders, races, orientations and creeds are demanding equality.

For this week, I want you guys to use a combination of the essays that we’ve read so far, and also information and data that you collect from an outside source. You don’t have to use the Library Databases (yet!), but you will be using the internet to research some magazines, and draw conclusions about what you see/read.

Your Writing Assignment:

Survey the current issues of several magazines aimed at fans of rap music. Look through their front pages, make note of the ads, the images and themes of the websites, and the types of articles that they are hosting on their homepages.

What images do they present of women, men, and human relationships? How often do they reflect the themes that Morgan discusses? How often do they contradict the themes that Morgan is discussing? What other themes and patterns do you find? To what extend, if any, have the subjects and attitudes of hip-hop changed since the 1990s? Even still, with all the change, what still needs to change to make the scene even more “equal”?

After your Intro, begin your argument with a discussion of Gender Identity (reference the Devor article), and observe how these “gender roles” play a role in your life and community. Then begin to explore how these types of roles affect the lives of men and women in terms of power structures; in the story of America, who is always the “more powerful” or “head of the household?” This will create a nice springboard for your discussion of gender within hip-hop.
