In the United States, the rare red wolf (Canis lupus) has been known to hybridize with coyotes (Canis latrans), which are much more numerous. Although red wolves and coyotes differ in terms of morphology, behavior and DNA, genetic evidence suggests that the living red wolf individuals are actually hybrids. Red wolves are designated as an endangered species and hence receive legal protection under the Endangered Species Act. Some people think that their endangered species status should be withdrawn because the remaining red wolves are hybrids, not members of a “pure” species. Do you agree? Why or why not? Support your stance with examples.

You are the chief accountant for ZM Corp., which is located in Illinois. In November 2017, that state had the second highest unemployment rate in the Midwest: 4.9% (down from 6.1% in January 2015).1 For the past few years, you have noticed that the company’s bad debt rate has been about 7% of year-end accounts receivable. That rate of bad debts has severely affected the company’s profitability…especially since management has steadily been lowering the standards for granting credit to customers.

Your salary structure (as well as that of other corporate managers) allows for a bonus when net income is equal to or greater than a specific percentage of net sales. Unfortunately, that profit metric has not been reached in four years. However, the CEO and CFO (who is retiring after the first quarter of 2018) realized that a change in the bad debts percentage would allow them and you to obtain bonuses in 2017. If bad debts were computed at 2% of year-end A/R rather than 7%, everyone would receive a reasonable (but not extreme) bonus for 2017. The CEO justifies the use of that rate by concluding that, since unemployment in Illinois has been decreasing over the past few years, so will bad debts.

a.   Is a change in a bad debts estimate permissible under generally accepted accounting principles? If yes, explain how such a change is effected. If no, explain why such a change would not be allowed. (1 pt.)

b.   Would making such a change in the bad debts estimate violate any basic accounting concepts? Explain your yes or no answer. (2 pts.)

c.   Provide at least two alternatives to help improve the company’s profit performance. (1/2 pt. for each, up to 1 pt.)

d.   You have a new baby at home as of September 2017. The bonus would help with the added expenses. Additionally, you are up for promotion to CFO next year upon the retirement of the current CFO; allowing the current CEO and CFO to receive their bonuses would certainly bring positive recommendations for that new position.

      1.   Is reducing the bad debts estimate illegal? Explain. (1/2 pt.)

      2.   Is reducing the bad debts estimate unethical, given the CEO’s justification? Explain. (1/2 pt.)

e.   Assume that the CEO and CFO are very adamant that the bad debts percentage be reduced in 2017 to 2% of year-end receivables. The 5% difference is not material to the financial statements. You believe that you will be terminated if you don’t make this adjustment. What should you consider in making your decision? (2 pts.)

Trying to figure out what topic i should use for my Environmental class, Any suggestions and a couple points to write about would be awesome?

*****Here is the project details;

For a major part of your grade, you are going to research and complete an environmental issues paper. This will help you build the skills necessary to develop an informed opinion and present that opinion in written form. This project will serve as a final assessment for the course. Using the content of the course, critically evaluate and analyze a controversial environmental issue of your choosing. You must examine the pros, cons, compromises, and tradeoffs of the issue by gathering credible information from various sources and assess the scientific credibility of the information. You will then develop from this information a well thought out paper that will address the major players involved, relevant cited facts, and a clearly identified opinion.

The first part of this project will be to submit a topic to your instructor for approval. Research the topic using online library, the online library, scientific journals, government documents, books, science magazines, and personal interviews. Peer reviewed sources should form the basis of your paper. Use a minimum of 6 sources. The final paper should be double-spaced, 12 point, and 6 to 8 pages in length with citations in APA format. Anytime you use the writings or ideas of others as though they were your own, you are plagiarizing (even if you paraphrase). All information and ideas that are not a part of general knowledge must be cited. When in doubt, cite!

Your final paper should address the following key points:

The Controversy: Identify the controversy

The Major Players: Who is involved? Why are they involved?

Important Facts: State relevant facts concerning the issue. Try to separate fact from opinion. Try not to show your own bias. Properly use APA citations

Side One: Arguments; state briefly and cite your sources

Side Two: Arguments; state briefly and cite your sources

Your Opinion and Rationale: I believe that..., We should..., I feel that... Use supporting arguments and rationale. What arguments would you use to present to those who disagree with you? Cite all of your sources.

References: Alphabetize your sources. Make sure there are sources representing both sides of the issue.

The schedule of deliverables for this project are:

Week 02 - Topic Submission

Week 03 - Begin Research

Week 04 - Reference List

Week 05 - Rough Draft - Peer Review

Week 06 - Final Paper

DISCUSSION BOARD FORUM 1/PROJECT 2 INSTRUCTIONS Standard Deviation and Outliers Thread:

For this assignment, you will use the Project 2 Excel Spreadsheet to answer the questions below. In each question, use the spreadsheet to create the graphs as described and then answer the question. Put all of your answers into a thread posted in Discussion Board Forum 1/Project 2. This course utilizes the Post-First feature in all Discussion Board Forums. This means you will only be able to read and interact with your classmates’ threads after you have submitted your thread in response to the provided prompt. For additional information on Post-First, click here for a tutorial. This is intentional. You must use your own work for answers to Questions 1–5. If something happens that leads you to want to make a second post for any of your answers to Questions 1–5, you must get permission from your instructor.

1. A. Create a set of 5 points that are very close together and record the standard deviation. Next, add a sixth point that is far away from the original 5 and record the new standard deviation. What is the impact of the new point on the standard deviation? Do not just give a numerical value for the change. Explain in sentence form what happened to the standard deviation.

B. Create a data set with 8 points in it that has a mean of approximately 10 and a standard deviation of approximately 1. Use the second chart to create a second data set with 8 points that has a mean of approximately 10 and a standard deviation of approximately 4. What did you do differently to create the data set with the larger standard deviation?

2. Go back to the spreadsheet and clear the data values from Question 1 from the data column and then put values matching the following data set into the data column for the first graph. 50, 50, 50, 50, 50. Notice that the standard deviation is 0. Explain why the standard deviation for this one is zero. Do not show the calculation. Explain in words why the standard deviation is zero when all of the points are the same. If you don’t know why, try doing the calculation by hand to see what is happening. If that does not make it clear, try doing a little research on standard deviation and see what it is measuring and then look again at the data set for this question.

3. Go back to the spreadsheet one last time and put each of the following three data sets into one of the graphs. Record what the standard deviation is for each data set and answer the questions below. Data set 1: 0, 0, 0, 100, 100, 100 Data set 2: 0, 20, 40, 60, 80, 100 Data set 3: 0, 40, 45, 55, 60, 100 Note that all three data sets have a median of 50. Notice how spread out the points are in each data set and compare this to the standard deviations for the data sets. Describe the relationship you see between the amount of spread and the size of the standard deviation and explain why this connection exists. Do not give your calculations in your answer—explain in sentence form. For the last 2 questions, use the Project 1 Data Set. 4. Explain what an outlier is. Then, if there are any outliers in the Project 1 Data Set, what are they? If there are no outliers, say no outliers.

5. Which 4 states have temperatures that look to be the most questionable or the most unrealistic to you? Explain why you selected these 4 states. For each state, give both the name and the temperature. Replies: After you have submitted your thread, you will be able to see your classmates’ threads. Find 2 classmates who disagreed with at least some part of your answers to Questions 4 and 5 and explain why your answers are correct. If you change your mind about your answers for Questions 4 and 5, explain what you were thinking originally as well as what you think now and why. Replies must be at least 50 words each. Submit your thread by 11:59 p.m. (ET) on Saturday of Module/Week 3. Submit your replies to 2 classmates’ threads by 11:59 p.m. (ET) on Monday of the same module/week.
