The new president of Malawi is looking for ways of increasing the revenue his government collects. At the moment, he is undecided between imposing a specific tariff on imports or a quota whereby the quota licenses will be auctioned in a competitive market.

i) Given the two options, what choice should he make? Give any two reasons.

ii) Are the two options the president is considering optimal avenues for collecting government revenue?

In the book Analysis of Longitudinal Data, 2nd ed., (2002, Oxford University Press), by Diggle, Heagerty, Liang, and Zeger, the authors analyzed the effects of three diets on the protein content of cow’s milk. The data shown here were collected after one week and include 25 cows on the barley diet and 27 cows each on the other two diets:

diet Protein content of cow's milk.
Barley 3.63 3.24 3.98 3.66 4.34 4.36 4.17 4.4 3.4 3.75 4.2 4.02 4.02 3.9 3.81 3.62 3.66 4.44 4.23 3.82 3.53 4.47 3.93 3.27 3.3

(a) What is the value of LSD for Barley+Lupins diet and Lupins diet? Use α=0.05.
Round your answer to three decimal places (e.g. 98.765).

(c) What is the absolute value of difference between mean protein content after Barley+Lupins diet and Lupins diet?
Round your answer to three decimal places (e.g. 98.765).

(d) Estimate the standard error for comparing the means using the graphical method. Use minimum sample size.
Round your answer to three decimal places (e.g. 98.765).

a. You should not be surprised by the presence of a large number of outliers because the magazines are highly heterogeneous and it is unrealistic to expect a single relationship to connect all of them. Find outliers and high leverage points. Delete the outliers and obtain an acceptable regression equation that relates advertising revenue to advertising pages.

b. For the deleted data, check the homogeneity of the variance. Choose an appropriate transformation of the data and fit the model to the transformed data. Evaluate the fit.

The effectiveness of a blood-pressure drug is being investigated. An experimenter finds that, on average, the reduction in systolic blood pressure is 83.2 for a sample of size 27 and standard deviation 7.1. Estimate how much the drug will lower a typical patient's systolic blood pressure (using a 95% confidence level). Assume the data is from a normally distributed population. Enter your answer as a tri-linear inequality accurate to three decimal places.
