Prehistoric pottery vessels are usually found as sherds (broken pieces) and are carefully reconstructed if enough sherds can be found. Information taken from Mimbres Mogollon Archaeology by A. I. Woosley and A. J. McIntyre (University of New Mexico Press) provides data relating x = body diameter in centimeters and y = height in centimeters of prehistoric vessels reconstructed from sherds found at a prehistoric site. The following Minitab printout provides an analysis of the data.
| Predictor | Coef | SE Coef | T | P |
| Constant | -0.227 | 2.429 | -0.09 | 0.929 |
| Diameter | 0.7770 | 0.1470 | 5.33 | 0.001 |
| S = 4.09980 | R-Sq = 79.1% |
(a) The standard error Se of the linear
regression model is given in the printout as "S." What is the value
of Se?
(b) The standard error of the coefficient of the predictor variable
is found under "SE Coef." Recall that the standard error for
b is
Se/√Σx2 –
(1/n)(Σx)2. From the Minitab
display, what is the value of the standard error for the slope
b?
(c) The formula for the margin of error E for a
c% confidence interval for the slope β can be
written as E = tc(SE Coef). The Minitab display
is based on n = 16 data pairs. Find the critical value
tc for a 95% confidence interval in the
relevant table. Then find a 95% confidence interval for the
population slope β. (Use 3 decimal places.)

Explain. What would be the effect of the optional courses of action on how stock would be presented in Alcoa’s balance sheet? If the shares are later resold for an amount greater than cost, how should Alcoa account for the sale?

The proportion of tax collected from the company that is claimed by shareholders is 0.6. b) The market price per mortgage bond is $1,000. The bonds mature 10 years from today and the next interest payment is due in six months. c) The financial press advises that short-term overdraft rates are currently 12% per annum compounded daily. The company has been using bank overdraft in the past ten years. d) The most recent annual dividend for ordinary shares was 40 cents. The company’s dividends are fully franked and the dividends per share should continue to increase at a 6 percent growth rate into the indefinite future. The market price of the shares is currently $5.80; however, issue costs of 50 cents per share are expected if new shares are issued. Clearly show the relevant cost of capital for each source of finance and compute the weighted average cost of capital (WACC) for the company. State any assumptions that may be necessary.

In 1997, a disagreement arose between Livent Inc. and its auditor, Deloitte and Touche (Deloitte). Livent, which operated several theaters for live stage production, had sold the naming rights to one of its theaters to AT&T for $12.5 million. The agreement was oral, and one of the theaters was under construction. The auditors for Deloitte believed that only a portion of the deal should be included in revenue, but Livent wanted to book the entire $12.5 million. Livent retained Ernst & Young (EY) to provide an opinion on the transaction. EY’s report indicated that all $12.5 million could be recorded as revenue. Deloitte hired Price Waterhouse (currently PricewaterhouseCoopers) to review the transaction. Price Waterhouse agreed with EY and Livent, and Deloitte allowed Livent to book the $12.5 million. In 1998, Livent issued a series of press releases indicating the discovery of significant account irregularities and, later in 1998, Livent declared bankruptcy.
Required: Exhibiting professional competence and due professional care are part of the general standards set forth in the AICPA Code of Professional Conduct. Comment on the decision to engage public accounting firm competitors EY and Price Waterhouse concerning the disagreement over the accounting treatment of the $12.5 million transaction. Do you believe that hiring a competitor firm is sufficient to meet due professional care standard even though the company eventually declares bankruptcy?
