Sam, a 42-year-old man, was booked for an endoscopy at a local clinic. Prior to the procedure he was injected with sedatives, but after several minutes the nurse noticed Sam seemed uncomfortable and required additional sedation. She used the same syringe, dipped it in the open sedative vial and re-injected him. The procedure continued as normal. Several months later, Sam, suffering from swelling of the liver, stomach pain, fatigue and jaundice, was diagnosed with Hepatitis C. The Centers for Disease Control was contacted, as 84 other cases of liver disease were linked to the clinic. It was believed that the sedative vial may have been contaminated from the backflow into the syringe and that the virus may have been passed on from the contaminated vial. Several health-care workers commented that reusing the syringe on the same patient (and thus dipping a used syringe into a common vial) was common practice.

A sinking fund is set up to make provision for the replacement of the machine in ten years’ time, and pays interest at a rate of 9.25% p.a. compounded monthly.

3. Determine the monthly amount that has to be deposit into the sinking fund to realize enough money for a replacement machine in ten years’ time. Payments start immediately and end on the day that the replacement machine is purchased.

4. After five years new technology in Compact Discs are introduced to the market. This machine will cost $2 million. If you decide to replace your current machine immediately, how much money will you have to borrow to purchase the new equipment, if you use the sinking fund and the sales of the old machine towards paying for this new machine?

Having been stuck at home for the last few months, your friend Ben is excited by a new business idea. He asks for your feedback on the sales section of his new business plan. Ben’s Bears will create custom teddy-bears, that will include a small chip holding a selection of recorded voices. When grandparents or other loved ones order the bear, they can upload some short recordings of their voices which the children will hear when they press a button on the bear.
