The following is adapted for academic purposes from the original speech: “Staying on Top of Our Game” by Singapore Minister Mr Ong Ye Kung during the launch of the Financial Services Industry Transformation Map on 30th Oct 2017.
“The regulator facilitates the development of infrastructure upon which new services and ideas can thrive. A good example is the payments infrastructure. Three years ago, MAS worked with the banking industry to launch FAST, to conduct direct real-time transfers between bank accounts. This year, the banks launched PayNow, which links bank accounts to NRIC or mobile numbers, making transfers more convenient. More importantly, PayNow will activate the full potential of FAST. It currently works only for P2P, but will be progressively expanded for P2B and B2B next year. To further facilitate this, we will introduce by the end of the year a common QR code that can accept all payments using QR readers…..”

Question 1:
To regulate the payment systems in Singapore, MAS requires financial institutions to comply with the relevant licensing and ongoing licensing requirement to control and minimise certain regulatory risks. Appraise one (1) of these risks that you think MAS would be most concerned with?

An enzyme was found that catalyzes the reaction between students, S and academic success, P (for pass); the enzyme was called studyase.

An enzyme assay was run on studyase. 10μg of studyase (molecular weight 20,000D) was placed in a set of test tubes each of which contained 1mL of the substrate student at varying concentrations and the amount of product, academic success (P) was determined.

The following results were determined:

Velocity, V (μmole/mL/sec)

Note 1mM = 1millimole/L = 1μmol/mL

Plot a Lineweaver-Burk plot of 1/V versus 1/S

Determine Vmax and Km for the enzyme studyase.

Calculate Kcat and the catalytic constant (kcat/km) for the enzyme. (find [E]T as total μmoles/mL)

Another enzyme called partyase was analyzed and when 0.010 μmoles of this enzyme was assayed it was found to have a Vmax of about 50 μmol/mL/sec and a Km of 5 mM. Calculate Kcat and the catalytic constant for this enzyme.

i.Compare the 2 enzymes on the basis of affinity for the binding site and kinetic efficiency.

In a study conducted to determine the role that sleep disorders play in academic performance, researcher Jane Gaultney conducted a survey of 1845 college students to determine if they had a sleep disorder (such as narcolepsy, insomnia, or restless leg syndrome). Of the 503 students with a sleep disorder, the mean grade point average was 2.65 with a standard deviation of 0.87. Of the 1342 students without a sleep disorder, the mean grade point average was 2.82 with a standard deviation of 0.83. Is there evidence to suggest sleep disorders adversely affect one’s GPA at the a = 0.05 level of significance?

Question 1:

One of the functions the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) performs in the financial market of Singapore is the oversight of payment systems. Relate and discuss the relevant Act, Regulated Activities and Types of Licenses that MAS uses to perform this function as discussed in the speech above.

The academic motivation and study habits of female students as a group are better than those of males. The Survey of Study Habits and Attitudes (SSHA) is a psychological test that measures these factors. The distribution of SSHA scores among the women at a college has mean 120 and standard deviation 28, and the distribution of scores among male students has mean 105 and standard deviation 35. You select a single male student and a single female student at random and give them the SSHA test.

**No sample size was given

a) Explain why it is reasonable to assume that the scores of the two students are independent.

b) What are the expected value and standard deviation of the difference (female minus male) between their scores?

c) From the information given, can you find the probability that the wom

Integrating PHRs with EHRs

You are the Director of Clinical Informatics at an academic medical center in the western United States. Part of your role is to oversee the patient portal which is considered part of the outpatient EHR. The center is planning to adopt and integrate a PHR with its EHR. The hospital CEO drafts of a vision statement that states, “By using the latest technology, University Hospital will improve how our patients experience Health Care. Instead of patients coming to us for help, we will be there whenever and wherever they need us, asking, ‘How can we help you?’ This initiative will make healthcare easier to access and more convenient to use, improve patients’ health, and reduce the rising cost of health care in our area.”

1. What is your role in engaging populations to understand information about their health and how to access health information resources?

2. What steps would patients take to correct their data?

3. What barriers should this facility anticipate and rolling out the PHR, and what tactics should the organization take to overcome them?

The mean annual tuition and fees in the 2013-2014 academic year for a sample of 13 private colleges in California was $33,000 with a standard deviation of $7300. A dotplot shows that it is reasonable to assume that the population is approximately normal. Can you conclude that the mean tuition and fees for private institutions in California is less than $35,000? Use the α=0.01 level of significance and the P-value method with the TI-84 Plus calculator.

a. state null and alternative hypothesis. what tail is the hypothesis test?

b. Compute the P-value of the test statistic.

c. Determine whether to reject H0. Use the =α0.05 level of significance.

Scenario: An academic organisation is considering the purchase and operation of its own fleet of buses to transport its students to and from school at the end of this year. The bursar at the school has confirmed that, if this project can be implemented, the school will be able to cancel its current contract with the local bus operator, and as a result, the school will make cash savings of N$45 600 each year from 2011 onwards, after deducting operating costs.
The buses will cost the school N$255 000 and will have a scrap value of N$75 000 when they are sold after five years. The school’s cost of capital is 10%, and the maximum required payback is 3.5 years.

Questions:
1. Calculate the project’s payback period.
2. Calculate the project’s Net Present Value (NPV).
3. Calculate the project’s internal rate of return (IRR).
4. Determine with reasons which project (s) will finally be recommended.

Mary and her staff are all members serving on an ethics committee at an academic teaching...

Mary and her staff are all members serving on an ethics committee at an academic teaching hospital with no religious affiliations or sponsors.

Mary's hospital permits the performing of abortions by physicians in the first trimester or in later trimesters if the health of the mother is at stake. The costs associated with abortions are paid either by the patient out-of-pocket or by the patient's private insurance. (It is federal law that there are no federally funded abortions, for example, through Medicaid).

There has been a great deal of tension among providers in the OB/GYN department lately. Dr. Henderson is a physician recently hired to work in that department. Last week, he refused to perform an elective first-trimester abortion based on his religious beliefs. Dr. Hinkley, another physician in the OB/GYN department, was willing and able to step in and provide the patient with the requested service, but he is concerned because Dr. Henderson has stated that he will refuse to perform a termination in the event of an emergency as well. Given that Dr. Henderson is sometimes the only on-call ob-gyn available, this could potentially mean that a case would occur where the patient did not receive the life-saving care.

The ethics committee is an advisory body in the hospital—the institution looks to it to provide guidance on what the ethics policies and stances of the organization should be and to manage ethical conflicts, but ultimately it is only advisory. It does not have authority to enforce any policy it recommends. The committee has been consulted about how this conflict should be addressed by the CEO. The CEO recognizes this is a problem that cannot be easily resolved and has never occurred before. She is not aware of any relevant policies in the organization. As members of the committee, Mary is meeting to discuss what her actions and recommendations should be, prior to having to meet with the CEO later in the week. What would Mary's recommendation be and why?

Compose a draft addressing the issues brief that considers the following:

  • Should Dr. Henderson have to provide the elective termination? What about the emergency termination? Why or why not?
  • What role do the pluralistic perspectives on the moral status of the embryo play in this ethical quandary?
  • What are the implications for physicians, nurses, medical students, and residents that provide clinical care; the institution; and patients if Dr. Henderson's exercise of conscience is respected? If it is not?
