Given all the recent news about the pandemic, I thought we could have a good discussion just on that this week! What is the economic impact of the shut downs and travel bans? What about the proposed tax breaks? What are your thoughts? There aren't right or wrong answers, but this is a good way to apply theory to the real world, so use some of those economic terms you have been learning! Feel free to post relevant news links. There are so many, I didn't pick one!

In general what (situations) and incentives faced by government make it difficult to keep a fixed exchange rate. Why did Mexico fail to defend its 1 peg? What was the state of Mexico’s reserves relative to their money supply at the time they defaulted? How about their budget deficit? Why did they default anyway.

In a particular year, 68% of online courses taught at a system of community colleges were taught by full-time faculty. To test if 68% also represents a particular state's percent for full-time faculty teaching the online classes, a particular community college from that state was randomly selected for comparison. In that same year, 31 of the 44 online courses at this particular community college were taught by full-time faculty. Conduct a hypothesis test at the 5% level to determine if 68% represents the state in question.

Note: If you are using a Student's t-distribution for the problem, you may assume that the underlying population is normally distributed. (In general, you must first prove that assumption, though.)

A. State the distribution to use for the test. (Round your standard deviation to four decimal places.)
P' ~ ________ (________,_________)

B. What is the test statistic? (Round your answer to two decimal places.)

C. What is the p-value? (Round your answer to four decimal places.)

D. Indicate the correct decision ("reject" or "do not reject" the null hypothesis), the reason for it, and write an appropriate conclusion.

(i) Alpha:
α =

E. Construct a 95% confidence interval for the true proportion. Sketch the graph of the situation. Label the point estimate and the lower and upper bounds of the confidence interval. (Round your answers to four decimal places.)

Figure 1. Water at 1 K Figure 2. Argon at 1 K Figure 3. Oxygen at 1 K Figure 4. Neon at 1 K a) As demonstrated in the above figures, explain in detail why water, H2O, expands upon freezing whereas the other substances in these figures contract upon freezing. In your answer ensure that you address the bonding, polarity, density and other relevant factors to describe these phenomena. b) Draw the structure of water when it freezes. c) Link the phenomena indicated from this observation to explain important aspects of the existence of life on our planet Earth. d) Are there any other substances which exhibit similar behaviour? If so, identify these substances by name, chemical symbol/formula, and a brief description – if there are many such substances, identify at least three of these substances.

1. Some economists argue suddenly reducing money supply growth is a costly way to reduce inflation and that it may not work. For example, if a government cuts money growth but makes no real fiscal reforms, people will expect the government will eventually need to expand the money supply to pay for its expenditures. Thus, the promise to fight inflation will not be credible. Explain why credibility is important to a reduction in the inflation rate.

2. Use the sticky-wage theory of aggregate demand to explain the short-run Phillips curve.

3. Carefully explain how monetary policy can be used to counter a recession. Explain what the central bank does as well as HOW its actions affect the economy.

4. Suppose that a country has an inflation rate of about 3 percent per year and a real GDP growth rate of about 3 percent per year. How large of a deficit can the government run (as a percentage of GDP) without raising the debt- to-income ratio?

5. List and EXPLAIN two costs of inflation.

6. Explain how tax cuts can increase aggregate supply.
