Travis Daniels has just graduated from Matchbook State University and is deciding whether to pursue his master's degree. Travis is now 20 years old.  He has just been offered a job with Schmultz, Inc. at an annual salary of $45,000 with anticipated annual increases (for inflation), of 3%. Travis anticipates working only through to his planned retirement, on his 65th birthday. Were Travis to defer the job acceptance and attend graduate school at Matchbook State, the tuition would cost $45,000 annually (paid at the beginning of each of the next three years), with a moderate 5% increase in tuition for the 2ndand 3rdyears. Once he completes his three year Master’s program, he could be reasonably assured of a better position with Schmultz, Inc. starting at $60,000 per year (including an anticipated annual increase of the same 3%). Assuming that the salaries are paid at the end of each year, is the pursuit of Travis's master's degree a worthwhile investment, when factoring an interest rate of 6%, or should he start now.

A study of 60,000 college students (enrolled in 4-year programs) from around the U.S. looked at the high school GPA for each student and their College GPA at the end of their first full year of college. The following summary statistics were recorded.

Avg(x) = 3.44, SDx = 0.66, Avg(y) = 3.25, SDy = 0.77, r = 0.6

where xj =HS GPA of the jth student and yj =FY GPA of the jth student.

Based on this data:

(a) Find the regression equation for predicting FY GPA from HS GPA.

Show the work you did to find the equation.

(b) Find the RMS error of regression for the regression you found in (a).

Show the work you did to find the RMS error.

(c) If Kelly had a 3.0 GPA in HS, what is Kelly's FY GPA predicted to be?

Explain your reasoning.

(d) Assuming that the scatter diagram for the GPA data is ''football-shaped", what is the probability that Kelly's FY GPA will be between 3.25 and 3.75?

Show your calculations, and state clearly what assumptions you are relying on to justify these calculations.

The sports saga with MRSA continues. A recent article in the NY Times about college sports described “To prevent teammates from sharing towels to wipe their faces or arms on the sideline, trainers have sometimes employed a small army of interns who scoop up any used towel so it can quickly be placed in the laundry. Jim Thornton, the athletic trainer at Clarion University in Pennsylvania, said his teams had begun using chemically treated towelettes that are about half the size of a standard towel and are discarded after each use. The expense may be worthwhile. One study of high school football players concluded that sharing a towel makes the chance of a MRSA infection eight times more likely.” https://www.nytimes.com/2017/10/06/sports/the-never-ending-battle-against-sports-hidden-foe.html

They are talking about community acquired MRSA, which is the same as subtype USA300. What genes made this MRSA able to be transmitted via towels and why? Would you expect nonMRSA S. aureus to be equally transmitted? Why or why not?

You have recently graduated from your university course and start work with an audit firm. You meet an old school friend, Nayan, for dinner — you haven't seen each other for several years. Nayan is surprised that you are now working as an auditor because your childhood dream was to be a ballet dancer. Unfortunately, your knees were damaged in a fall, and you can no longer dance. The conversation turns to your work, and Nayan wants to know how you do your job. Nayan cannot understand why an audit is not a guarantee the company will succeed. Nayan also thinks that company managers will lie to you in order to protect themselves. As an auditor, you would have to assume that you cannot believe anything a company manager says to you.

Required: (a) Write a letter to Nayan explaining the concept of reasonable assurance, and how reasonable assurance is determined. Explain why an auditor cannot offer absolute assurance (b) Explain in the letter to Nayan the concept of 'professional scepticism' and how it is not the same as assuming that managers are always trying to deceive auditors

MBA_Salary table contains the annual salaries, in thousands of dollars, earned by individuals who graduated with MBAs in 2015 and 2016 from a certain business school in Canada. We would like to determine whether the distribution of salaries for 2015 MBA graduates is higher than for 2016 MBA graduates. a) Create a boxplot and compare the distribution of salaries for 2015 and 2016 graduates. b) Perform the appropriate non-parametric test at a 5% significance level to determine whether the salary for 2015 graduates is higher than for 2016 graduates. State the hypotheses clearly and show your manual calculation for all the relevant steps in the test. c) Use Excel to perform the appropriate non-parametric test in part (b). How does the result from Excel compare with your conclusion in part (b).

Introduction:

Blogging is one of the fundamental social media practices–arguably the first widespread form of social media. Blogging is one important way in which people take part in conversations within their area of interest, establish their expertise, and construct an online identity. The blogosphere is a place where communities form, grow, change, and dissolve.

The blog is a format that allows students to reflect on what they know, further integrate their knowledge, and show their unique understanding to others. Blog posts tend to be qualitatively different from journals and formal academic papers. They allow students to communicate in ways that are personally meaningful and consistent with the current “content creation” aspect of our digital culture. Also, anecdotal evidence strongly suggests that students work harder to prepare work that will be shared with a broader audience than their instructor.

Deliverable:

Requirement:

Students will create a 600 – 1,000 word blog post.

Students are responsible for writing a blog post on any (school appropriate) topic of their choosing. Example topics can include areas such as: digital marketing, social media marketing, advice.

Madison is a 10 year-old African American girl. She loves playing the piano and composing her own music. She is an avid computer wiz, taking after her father. She has designed all the family birthday cards and loves playing video games. When she comes home from school, she has a sweet snack, finishes her homework, and goes straight to the piano to practice. She spends hours at the keyboard, and by mealtime she says she is hungry.

Madison is 48 inches tall and weighs pound. Knowing that the family has a tendency to be heavier, her mother, Amy, is concerned about Madison's weight; Amy has been on and off Weight Watchers program for 15 years. Amy feels Madison should have more physical activity and needs to stop snacking on cupcakes and sweets. Madison is due for a preschool checkup. Amy is planning to ask the doctor for help with Madison's weight.

HOW DO DIET, ACTIVITY, HEREDITY AND FAMILY LIFESTYLE IMPACT HER CURRENT WEIGHT?

Is it worth going to college? Let's suppose that a typical college educated professional makes 85,000 dollars per year and a high school graduate makes 45,000 dollars per year. The direct costs of college (tuition, books, and so on) are 16,000 dollars a year (and a college degree takes 4 years). For the purpose of this exercise, consider that the earnings are constant until the age of 64; and thereafter, the earnings are zero. (a) Suppose that John is now eighteen, and he is contemplating on the possibility of going to college, should he go? Use a discount rate of 10 percent for your calculations. You should have 47 terms in the sum of the present value, one term for each year that elapses between ages of 18 and 64. (b) Now suppose that he is also a good racer. However, racing is a risky sport, and at most he can race until the age of 30. The contract that he can get is 200k dollars a year. Using the same discount rate as before, namely 10%, what should he do? Show your calculations.
