Throughout the 1990s when personal computers (PCs) were widely used, improvement in PC technology almost always resulted in a decrease in price of PCs. Nowadays people use smartphones, but improvement in technology is usually accompanied by an increase in the price of the smartphone (every new model of the iPhone or Samsung is more expensive than the previous one), which is exactly the opposite of what happened in the PC market.
What is different about the smartphone market (or
about the improvement in smartphone technology) that is different
from the PC market (or the improvement in PC technology)? Please
give an explanation.

In the early 1990s, fusion involving hydrogen dissolved in palladium at room temperature, or cold fusion, was proposed as a new source of energy. This process relies on the diffusion of H2 into palladium. The diffusion of hydrogen gas through a 0.005-cm-thick piece of palladium foil with a cross section of 0.780 cm2 is measured. On one side of the foil, a volume of gas maintained at 298 K and 1 atm is applied, while a vacuum is applied to the other side of the foil. After 24 h, the volume of hydrogen has decreased by 14.2 cm3 . What is the diffusion coefficient of hydrogen gas in palladium?

This process relies on the diffusion of H2 into palladium. The diffusion of hydrogen gas through a 0.005-cm-thick piece of palladium foil with a cross section of 0.810 cm2 is measured. On one side of the foil, a volume of gas maintained at 298 K and 1 atm is applied, while a vacuum is applied to the other side of the foil. After 24 h, the volume of hydrogen has decreased by 16.0 cm3 . What is the diffusion coefficient of hydrogen gas in palladium?

a. The original purchase price of the land where the store will be located.
b. The cost of demolishing the abandoned warehouse and clearing the lot.
c. The loss of sales in the existing retail outlet, if customers who previously drove across town to shop at the existing outlet become customers of the new store instead.

Suppose that the government makes a one-time investment in new public school buildings, which results in a one-time reduction in current consumption. The new public school buildings increase the efficiency with which human capital is accumulated. Use the endogenous growth model we discussed in class to determine the effects of this change on the paths of aggregate consumption over time. Explain the trade off between current consumption and future consumption.

School Building Capital Project Fund Transactions:
During the year, the city council approved the construction of a new school building at an estimated cost of $2,750,000. They also authorized the issuance of $2,500,000 in general obligation long-term bonds to finance the cost of construction. Record journal entries for the following transactions for fiscal year 2018 and post them to the general ledger for the School Building Capital Project Fund.
Entry Reference
CP1 $250,000 was received from the General Fund for construction
of a new school building (see entry GF9).
(GF9 The city government agreed to provide
$250,000 for the school building construction project and $250,000
was transferred to the school building capital project fund.)
CP2 On April 1, 2018, as authorized by the city council, $2,500,000 in 10% general obligation long-term bonds were issued for $2,580,000. The premium of $80,000 was reserved for redemption of the bonds and immediately transferred to the debt service fund. The principle was set aside for construction of the school. The bonds call for annual interest payments on March 31, and mature on April 1, 2038.
CP3 On June 1, the school building contract was awarded to the lowest bidder for $2,600,000, including planning and architect’s fees.
CP4 On November 30, 2018, progress billings of $1,250,000 for the school building were received from the contractor and $850,000 was paid in cash on December 31, 2017. The remaining balance is expected to be paid in January 2018. Liabilities resulting from the capital additions are recorded in “Contracts Payable.”

The U.N. World Food Program (WFP) is warning that upward of at least 14 million people could go hungry in Latin America as the coronavirus pandemic rages on, shuttering people in their homes, drying up work and crippling the economy. New projections released late Wednesday estimate a startling increase: Whereas 3.4 million experienced severe food insecurity in 2019, that number could more than quadruple this year in one of the world’s most vulnerable regions. U.N. food agency executive director David Beasley warned in April that an addition 130 million people could be “pushed to the brink of starvation” worldwide by the end of 2020. The impact of such a sharp rise in hunger could have far-reaching implications ranging from higher levels of chronic childhood malnutrition to security issues. The WFP is calling on nations to expand their social safety net to those who traditionally don’t qualify for aid. Many governments and international organizations have been stepping up, providing cash transfers and food deliveries, but are facing logistical and economic hurdles.
In the view of food insecurity around the world particularly in Latin American economies, World Food Program suggests countries to expand their social safety net. Discuss whether social safety net boosts the aggregate expenditure and leads economy to recover.
