In the one-period model, education can be represented as time spent by the representative consumer that is neither leisure nor time applied to producing output. What the economy gains in the future is that the representative consumer then has more time available, as measured in terms of effective units of labour time (adjusted for skill level, or what economists call human capital). That is, the aggregate production function can be seen as Y=zF(K, eN), where e is the quantity of human capital per worker, and education in the present increases e in the future.

Using the one-period model, what effects does additional education have in the present on consumption, leisure, employment, aggregate output, and the real wage?

consumption _________ (may increase, decrease, or not change, or must decrease, or must not change, or must increase)

Leisure _______ (may increase, decrease, or not change, or must decrease, or must not change, or must increase) and  the magnitude of the change in leisure _________ (must be equal to, must be less than, must be greater than, or must be greater than, less than, or equal to) the amount of additional time devoted to education. Employment (measured as hours worked) ________ (may increase, decrease, or not change, or must decrease, or must not change, or must increase) aggregate output _________(may increase, decrease, or not change, or must decrease, or must not change, or must increase) the real wage ________ (may increase, decrease, or not change, or must decrease, or must not change, or must increase)

  1. There are two main ways to describe how loud a sound is. One is that you can describe its intensity, I, measured in W/m2, which is the amount of energy per unit time, per unit area, transported by the sound. However, this is not very close to the human experience of sound loudness. The human experience of loudness (actually like the way most of our senses work) is that each factor of 10 in intensity sounds like the same sized “step” in loudness. In other words, in our experience of sound, the difference between 0.01 W/m2 and 0.1 W/m2, seems the same as the difference between 0.1 W/m2 and 1 W/m2. For this reason, when talking about loudness we often use the “decibel scale”, defined by

    ?I? β = (10dB)log I0

where I is the sound intensity, I0 is a reference intensity and β is the loudness in decibels. A common choice for I0 is the “threshold of hearing”, which for a typical person is I0 = 1 × 10−12 W/m2.

    1. (a) What intensity corresponds to β = 0 dB? Does 0 dB mean “no sound”?

    2. (b) The “threshold of pain” (hopefully the name makes it clear what this means...) is 130 dB. What sound intensity

      does this correspond to?

    3. (c) Some sound has a loudness of 50 dB. Another sound has 1200 times the intensity of the first sound. What is the loudness of the second sound?

Rossi Industries

Rossi Industries has payroll processes as described in the following paragraphs:

When a new employee is hired, the human resources department completes a personnel action form and forwards it to the payroll department. The form contains information such as pay rate, number of exemptions for tax purposes, and the type and amount of payroll deductions. When an employee is terminated or voluntarily separates from Rossi, the human resources department completes a personnel action form to indicate separation and forwards it to the payroll department.

Each employee in the production department maintains his own time card weekly. Employees fill out their time cards in ink each day, and at the end of the week, the time cards are forwarded to the payroll department. Employees in the payroll department use the time cards and employee records to prepare a weekly paycheck for each employee who has turned in a time card. A copy of the payroll checks is forwarded to the accounts payable department, and the original payroll checks are forwarded to the cash disbursements department to be signed. The payroll department updates the payroll subsidiary ledger. After the paychecks are signed, they are given to department supervisors to distribute. Any unclaimed checks are returned to the payroll department.

Required:

a. Prepare a process map of the payroll processes at Rossi.

b. Identify both internal control strengths and internal control weaknesses of the payroll processes.

c. For any internal control weaknesses, describe suggested improvements.

A researcher wants to know whether supplements affect how long vampires can go without requiring human blood. She took one sample of vampires (n = 10). Half received a placebo first and the supplement second, while the other half received the sup- plement first and the placebo second. She then recorded how many days the vampires could go without consuming human blood for each condition. The goal of the study was to see whether there would be any difference between supplement and placebo. Conduct the appropriate t-test for these data (α = 0.05) and calculate a confidence interval (95%) as a measure of effect size. Assume all assumptions for the test are met. (See table below for sample data.)

Given all of this informations, the researchers obtained a t test statistic of tobtained = −2.08. They also found an effect size of a 95% CI[−9.39, 0.39].

1. What kind of t-test was this? Independent-samples or repeated-measures?

2. Write the hypotheses for this kind of t-test.

3. Given the data shown, state the correct conclusion. (You’ll have to find your critical region first.)

4. Write an interpretation of the findings. Make sure that your conclusion paragraph includes all the important statistics: your t, df, alpha, and effect size, as well as the individual group means. Also make sure that you include a plain English statement at the end.

The Australian Government Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) is setting up a new, special task force to be known as the Australian National Department of Young Scholarly (ANDYS) Researchers. The purpose of ANDYS Researchers is to have the brightest young minds in Australia develop profile presentations for a range of countries that Australian firms may be looking to expand into. These profile presentations will be vital in providing critical analyses of some of the key issues for Australian firms in their international expansion. As star students from one of the world's best universities in Monash, you have recently been drafted into ANDYS Researchers.

Your first task is to select a country

  1. Using relevant concepts and measures, analyse the level of both economic development and human development in your chosen country. As part of your answer, explain which measure (economic or human development) is of greater significance to an Australian firm considering establishing a presence in that country.

  2. Using at least one (1) classical trade theory, identify and explain which industries your chosen country should specialise in when looking to trade with other countries. Should your chosen country specialise in just those industries where it is more efficient than other countries, or in those 2-3 industries that it is most efficient at (regardless of how this compares to other countries)? Justify your choice using theory.

On October 5, 2020, Diamond in the Flounder Recruiting Group Inc.’s board of directors decided to dispose of the Blue Division. A formal plan was approved. Diamond derives approximately 73% of its income from its human resources management practice. The Blue Division gets contracts to perform human resources management on an outsourced basis. The board decided to dispose of the division because of unfavourable operating results. Net income for Diamond was $95,970 for the fiscal year ended December 31, 2020 (after a charge for tax at 30% and after a writedown for the Blue assets). Income from operations of the Blue Division accounted for $4,270 (after tax) of this amount. Because of the unfavourable results and the extreme competition, the board believes that it cannot sell the business intact. Its final decision is to auction off the office equipment. The equipment is the division’s only asset and has a carrying value of $23,000 at October 5, 2020. The board believes that proceeds from the sale will be approximately $6,000 after the auction expenses. Currently, the equipment’s estimated fair value is $9,600. The Blue Division qualifies for treatment as a discontinued operation. Diamond prepares financial statements in accordance with ASPE.

Prepare a partial income statement for Diamond in the Flounder Recruiting Group. The income statement should begin with income from continuing operations before income tax.

In the past, SHR has relied on a collection of individual policies to communicate its expectations regarding
compliance with laws, regulations, and internal operating practices. The senior vice president – legal, who
also is designated as SHR’s CCO, has determined that the company has grown to a size and operating
complexity necessitating an integrated code of ethics and business conduct (the “code”). He has assembled
a team consisting of personnel from the legal, human resources, and internal audit functions to develop
this code.

Scenario 1 Activities
1. Explain why it is important to include representatives from the legal, human resources, and internal
audit functions in the development of the code. What other areas of the organization, if any, should
also be consulted when developing the code?
2. Based on the background and case facts describing SHR Corporation’s business, identify the types of
laws and regulations that the company is subject to and should consider for inclusion in the code.
3. Develop an outline for SHR’s code listing the sections that should be considered to create a robust,
comprehensive code. There is no need to develop any of these sections; simply create the outline.
4. Describe ways for communicating the new code and providing the necessary training to employees
and new hires.
5. There are other key elements to an effective compliance and ethics program. Discuss the value of the
following:
a. Annual certification of compliance.
b. Whistleblower hotline.
c. Escalation and investigation process.
d. Disciplinary action process.
e. Compliance program audits.

To produce a certain product, there are two competing processes under consideration. Process A
requires acquisition of a new machine that is estimated to have an initial cost of $30,000 and a salvage
value of $12,000 at the end of its useful life of 6 years. In addition, the process requires a fixed cost of
$47,000 per year and a variable cost of $250 per day. Alternatively, Process B requires the use of human
labor. The process will need 6 workers, each earning $100 per day and will have a fixed cost of $20,000
per year and additional variable costs of $200 per day.

State the factor of interest to consider for this problem. ( what is the main factor to consider) ?
