Company H&R BLOCK

Be sure to provide a link to the financial statements. You must use the annual report, from the H &R Block website, or from the SEC database. Quarterly financial statements should not be used to do ratios because (1) many companies are seasonal and quarterly numbers may not be representative of annual performance and (2) quarterly numbers are not audited, whereas annual financials are. Financial information provided by third parties like Yahoo Finance or Google Finance are not acceptable, as these numbers are not necessarily accurate. You must use H & R Blocks official annual report. If you go to H& R Blocks website, and select investor section, annual reports, or SEC filings and you should get the correct information (which also might be in the form of a 10K report)

Show the ratio calculation for each year, the calculation result, and the interpretation of the numbers. I suggest you put it in tabular format and cut and paste into discussion to maintain formatting Do not post as an attachment.

What do you note in the changes of ratios from year to year? Explain what the ratios mean. Do these ratios correlate with what you know about these companies? Be sure to provide the raw data so we can see how you calculated these ratios. Do not use calculated ratios you might find on financial websites. They are often incorrect or use old data.

1. Gross Profit margin

2. Profit Margin

3. Debt Ratio ( Liabilities/Assets)

4. Quick Ratio

Please be sure to use H&R Block as the company!

In tomatoes, yellow flowers (Wf) are dominant over white flowers (wf), and yellow fruit (r) are recessive to red fruit (R). A cross was made between true-breeding plants with yellow flowers and yellow fruit, and plants with white flowers and red fruit. The F1 generation plants were then crossed to plants with white flowers and yellow fruit. The following results were obtained:

75 white flowers, red fruit

205 white flowers, yellow fruit

216 yellow flowers, red fruit

37 yellow flowers, yellow fruit

a. What is the genotype of the F1 plant? Please write your answer is such a way that you show which alleles are present on each homologous chromosome. (3 points)

b. How many plants with yellow flowers and yellow fruit should we have expect to observe from these results? (3 points)

c. In testing to determine if these two traits are linked, what is the chi-square statistic associated with the test of independence? (3 points)

d. What are the degrees of freedom and probability associated with this statistic? Are these two traits linked? (3 points)

e. What is the distance in terms of map units between the two genes that control these traits? (3 points)

a) Calculate the HHI for insurance in this state.

b) What does this say about the level of competition? Provide a 2-3 sentence explanation.

c) Suppose the largest firm decides to split into two firms (each has a 15% share). Calculate the new HHI after the split. Using economic theory, identify and explain how the split may affect the cost and quality of insurance.

Fill out the answer sheet for each of the hypothesis tests below, using a 5% level of significance. Use 4 decimal places, unless the p-value is really small (less than 0.0001), in which case use at least 2 significant figures This means 2 non-zero numbers somewhere after the decimal point). Axis of graphs should be drawn with a ruler or done on a computer.

Suppose that students own an average of 4 pairs of jeans. 8 people from your class were surveyed to determine if the average for students at De Anza College is higher than 4.

a. Give the null and alternative hypotheses: Ho: _______________ Ha: ___________________

b. In words, CLEARLY state what your random variable X or P' represents.

c. State the distribution to use for the test. If t, include the degrees of freedom. If normal, include the mean and standard deviation.

d. p-value = ______________

e. In 1 – 2 complete sentences, explain what the p-value means for this problem.

f. Use the previous information to draw a graph of this situation. CLEARLY, label and scale the horizontal axis and shade the region(s) corresponding to the p-value. The values of your sample statistic and the hypothesized value of the population parameter should be on the axis.

g. Indicate the correct decision (“reject the null hypothesis” or “do not reject the null hypothesis”) and write an appropriate conclusion, using COMPLETE SENTENCES.

Decision:

Conclusion:

h. Construct a 95% Confidence Interval for the true mean or proportion. Include a sketch of the graph of the

situation. Label the point estimate and the lower and upper bounds of the Confidence Interval.

Confidence Interval: ( ___________________ , ___________________ )

i. Interpret the confidence interval in a complete sentence.
