Red Point Alloys BV produces cast bronze valves for use in offshore oil platforms. Currently, Red Point produces 1600 valves per day. The 20 workers at Red Point work from 7 a.m. until 4 p.m., with 30 minutes off for lunch and a 15-minute break during the morning work session and another at the afternoon work session Red Point is in a competitive industry and needs to increase productivity to stay competitive. They feel that a 20 percent increase is needed.

Red Point’s management believes that the 20 percent increase will not be possible without a change in working conditions, so they change work hours. The new schedule calls on workers to work from 7:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m., during which workers can take one hour off at any time of their choosing. Obviously, the number of paid hours is the same as before, but production increases, perhaps because workers are given a bit more control over their workday. After this change, valve production increased to 1800 units per day.

a) Calculate labor productivity for the initial situation.
b) Calculate labor productivity for the hypothetical 20 percent increase.

c) What is the productivity after the change in work rules?

  1. Faculty members in a state university system who resign within 10 years of initial employment are entitled to receive the money paid into a retirement system, plus 4% per year. Unfortunately, experience has shown that the state is extremely slow in returning this money. Concerned about such a practice, a local teachers organization decides to investigate. After a confrontation with the teachers’ union, the state promised to make reimbursements within 60 days. Monitoring of the next 40 resignations yields an average of 61 days, with a standard deviation of 10 days.

    1. (a) Set up the appropriate hypothesis tests for this investigation.

    2. (b) Test the null hypothesis using an α level of 0.01, draw out a graphical representation of the test. Include critical values and test statistic value. What is your conclusion regarding the population parameter μ ( state your answer in the context of the problem).

  • The text discusses the “fairness of taxes” and states: “While everyone can agree that government needs to raise revenues through taxation, there is considerable debate about what each person’s “fair share” of the tax burden should be. To help societies decide which taxes are most fair, two principles of taxation are considered: 1) the benefits-received principle and 2) the ability-to-pay principle.” Basic Economic Principles.
  • In a minimum of 250 words, please share your opinion on a hypothetical problem: How will your State tax citizens to fund: 1) a major, cross-State highway; and 2) public transportation in the State Capitol (bus, commuter train, ferry). Should only users be taxed (the benefits-received principle); or should all tax-payers fund these two things (ability-to-pay principle); or do you have another idea?

The efficacy of a drug is dependent on a therapeutic concentration reaching its target site of action. If the too little drug is present there may be no therapeutic benefit, too much and over-dosage might occur. Describe in detail the pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic properties that need to be ascertained in order to use a drug properly. Your answer should include how these properties can be determined, why they are important to the functioning of a particular drug and what might go wrong if these properties are determined incorrectly.

Data from 1991 General Social Survey classify a sample of Americans according to their gender and their opinion about afterlife (example from A. Agresti, 1996, “Introduction to categorical data analysis”). The opinions about afterlife were classified into two categories: Yes and No (or undecided). For example, for the females in the sample - 435 said that they believed in an afterlife and 147 said that they did not or were undecided.

Emma has noticed a small red fox living in the park near her apartment. She takes a walk at the same time every day and has observed the fox in three different areas: in the woods, in the meadow, and by the pond.

If it is in the woods on one observation, then it is twice as likely to be in the woods as in the meadow on the next observation but not by the pond.

If it is in the meadow on one observation, then it is equally likely to be in any of the three locations on the next observation.

If it is by the pond on one observation, there is a 0.5 probability it will be by the pond on the next observation and will otherwise be in the woods.

When Emma went for a walk today, the red fox was in the woods.

a. Define the states and construct the transition matrix for this Markov chain.

b. Find the initial distribution vector for this Markov Chain.

c. Determine the probability that the red fox is in each of the three areas tomorrow.

If this trend continues, what is the probability the red fox will be in the meadow in the long run?
