Government, Politics, and Social Justice: Is America on the right road?

Amy Chua's The Right Road to America? gives a very open and honest view to the consternation that is being lived in this country due to its immigration policies. "Give me your tried, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free" -Emma Lazarus' sonnet, New Colossus. The latter quote is displayed inside the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty. This was once the belief of what America would be, the refuge to those that wanted freedom and betterment for themselves and loved ones. America was once the shores of relief and hope, are we to rethink this thought and take into consideration that instead of open shores what America is to become is the land of walls. A nation where the weary will be turned away because the other afore thought was that all immigrants once here would assimilate, leaving behind culture, religion, ideology of their old country and become American, strictly just American. Was this the tariff that had to be paid for freedom? Was the proverbial fine print not clear enough to those that would risk all to come here? Here is the conundrum, the freedom promised allows for the immigrant that finds himself/herself in this country to practice the religion of their choosing, to form or keep ideology as they see fit, the freedoms promised and protected allows for the open practice of native cultures. We can not now at this stage of the game, when we have claims such as "melting pot" and inclusive diversity that the rest of the world should mirror, now turn around and say no this is not who we are. Yes we are Americans and we state it proudly, but we must look at what has lead to that pride; also remembering what has brought us shame such as slavery and the reservations that we still have our Native American people living on. We must learn from those histories as well if we wish to continue as a super power. It was those Native Americans who bestowed the land, it was those slaves and immigrates who have built a nation to be proud of. Let History tell the story. "Anti-immigration talking heads forget that their own scapegoating vitriol will, if anything, drive immigrants farther from the U.S. mainstream. One reason we don't have Europe's enclaves is our unique success in forging an ethnically and religiously neutral national identity, uniting individuals of all backgrounds. This is America's glue, and people like Huntington and O'Reilly unwittingly imperil it" (Muller, 2014, pg. 337).
