QSR magazine assessed the work of McDonalds and Taco Time restaurants in terms of their service time in seconds. For the sample of 308 observations from Taco Time restaurants, the mean service time was 158.03 seconds with a standard deviation of 33.8 seconds. For the sample of 317 observations from McDonalds restaurants, the mean service time was 189.49 seconds with a standard deviation of 41.3 seconds. Is there a difference in the mean service times between Taco Time and McDonald's restaurants?

Locate the results of a recent survey that shows at least two variables in a newspaper, magazine, or Internet article. Outline the survey data so that your peers can understand the variables and results, and then identify at least one key formula from this module that you could use to evaluate the data. Provide a brief explanation of why you selected the formula you did and why it matters. Also, explain what the formula is, and clearly define your parameters.

You're the CFO of Axelrod Trucking, a privately held firm whose owner, Joe Axelrod, is interested in selling the company and retiring. He therefore wants to pump up its value by any means possible. Joe read an article about leverage in a business magazine the other day, and has sent you a memo directing that you restructure the firm's capital to the "optimum" in order to maximize the company's value. Prepare a brief response to Joe's memo.

When it comes to technology’s influence on America’s young adults, reading is not dead-at least not the news. Overall, more Americans prefer to watch their news than to read it or listen to it. But does that preference vary by age? To explore this question, we took a large random sample of young American adults (18-34 years old) and a large random sample of older American adults (50+ years old) and asked each if they prefer to watch the news versus reading the news. Using the sample results, we constructed a 99% confidence interval for the difference in the population proportion of young American adults who prefer to watch the news versus reading the news less the population proportion of older American adults who prefer to watch the news versus reading the news to be between (-0.005, 0.258).

We estimate the values of the difference in the ________________ proportions vary by roughly
_______________ from the difference in the ________________ proportions, on average.

2.b
1 point(s)
Correct or Incorrect : If we repeated this procedure many times and for each repetition we computed the 99% confidence interval, we would expect 99% of the resulting intervals to contain the difference in the sample proportion of young American adults who prefer watching the news to reading the news less the sample proportion of older American adults who prefer watching the news to reading the news.

2.c
1 point(s)
Correct or Incorrect: If we were to use the same data and test the hypotheses H0: p1 = p2 versus Ha: p1 ≠ p2, we would fail to reject the null hypothesis at the 1% signficance level.
Correct
Incorrect
2.d
1 point(s)
Correct or Incorrect: Because most of the reasonable values in the 99% confidence interval are positive, we can say that the population proportion of young American adults who prefer watching the news to reading the news is significantly higher than the population proportion of older American adults who prefer watching the news to reading the news.

2.e
1 point(s)
Correct or Incorrect : We estimate the difference in the population proportion of young American adults who prefer to watch the news versus reading the news less the population proportion of older American adults who prefer to watch the news versus reading the news to be 12.65% with a 99% margin of error of 13.15%
Correct
Incorrect
2.f
1 point(s)
Correct or Incorrect: With 99% confidence, we estimate that the population proportion of young American adults who prefer to watch the news versus reading the news is between 0.5% below and 25.8% above the population proportion of older American adults who prefer to watch the news versus reading the news.

In what ways do advertisers in magazines use sexual imagery to appeal to youth? One study classified each of 1500 full-page or larger ads as "not sexual" or "sexual," according to the amount and style of the dress of the male or female model in the ad. The ads were also classified according to the age group of the intended readership. Here is a summary of the data.
| Magazine readership age group | ||
| Model dress | Young adult | Mature adult |
| Not sexual (percent) | 72.4% | 75.4% |
| Sexual (percent) | 27.6% | 24.6% |
| Number of ads | 1000 | 500 |
Perform the significance test that compares the model dress for the age groups of magazine readership. Summarize the results of your test. (Use α = 0.05. Round your χ2 to three decimal places and round your P-value to four decimal places.)
| χ2 | = | |
| P-value | = |
Give your conclusion.
Reject the null hypothesis. There is significant evidence of an association between model dress and age group.Reject the null hypothesis. There is not significant evidence of an association between model dress and age group. Fail to reject the null hypothesis.
